Normal? Or crap job by PO?
I was out cleaning up the bike today. Great weather for late November in Wisconsin. I started in on the forks and saw the finish seemed to start scraping down to the bare metal. Is this normal or did a PO just do some crappy work?

Looks like he was trying to polish them and got tired/bored.

The PO did a crappy job or did not clean it at all.

maybe the clear coat is just coming off, mine did the same thing and some patches are shiny like that and others are yellowed/rough

Kind of what I figured. This bike has been a treasure trove of small little shortcuts taken. Hopefully I can get them all sorted out over the winter.
Best remedy? Finish polishing them or clean them up for powdercoating? What will last the longest?

im actually in the process of redoing mine right now with new seals and what not. im going to strip the old clear off with berryman chem tool. then im going to hit them with an sos pad to get a good clean and rough the surface up. then air dry and go with argent silver and a semi gloss clear powdercoat.

Sounds like we are in the same boat then... I started working it off with steel wool already. I will pull the tire off next week after I finish helping my wife move this weekend. I will be too busy to get much time on it.

did the stock fork legs when new have a chrome or really glossy silver appearance or are they a dull more industrial type silver...?

I am not sure. That is the condition that I got mine in, dull, yet half polished.

I had mine powder coated gloss silver, looks original unless you bend over and get close.
