I just bought a cylinder block that was described as belonging to the 96-99 750 Srad. It is a closed deck design. Since I havent got around to taking off the old one I have nothing to compare it to. Are some of these blocks closed ?
Thanks for the quick reply...if it is legit does it take a different head gasket ? I see you are in Lawton. Me and a buddy got drunk one night and left the Nco club on our bikes and ended up on the runway at Ft. Sill lol !
It's legit, and the head gasket gets complicated. Originally, in 96, 750 had a 3 ply head gasket, then the found out that the rods were stretching and ptv clearance was an issue, so the solution was a cheap power robbing fix, a 4 ply head gasket. Your answer really lies in what you are trying to do, and your engine building savvy. Tell me more.
Yeah.... L-town sucks.
My son decided he wants more power after I let him ride my R1 and now Busa. His problem is he is in that very poor stage of life called college so a straight 750 swap is out of the question and besides he needs some wrench time (anybody can swap a motor). Thru research on this forum and others it looks like a srad 750 block will fit the 600 cases and to get around the piston pin size issue the 00-03 750 pistons will fit the 600 small ends. The 96-99 and 00-03 750 pistons have the same specs clearance wise with the K pistons having more compression. My thinking is that the 1.5mm shorter 600 stroke should negate any detonation or ptv contact. Im gonna keep the 600 head and carbs for more midrange. That should take care of his ego on the street when he hooks up with his buddies on their newer 600's. And you are right...Im kinda stumped with the head gasket selection. I would welcome any tips or admonitions.
I would buy a four ply and take off one layer, put it together with that. Then check ptv clearance on intake at 15* ATDC and exhaust at 15* BTDC, look for 1 mm clearance, if you don't have that, replace with 4 ply.
