any way to de adjust 00 750 cam tensioner?

im hearing a whirring noise lately and i have a feeling my auto cam tensioner went to the next click and is a bit tight on the cam chain. i took the oil line off of it and pulled the spring out just too see how it worked but when i put it back together it still had the whirring noise. it only does the noise when the bike is warm and past like 130 degrees. it sounds to be coming from the timing side of the motor. it varies with rpm . sounds like a belt too tight on a car, now i am not familiar with the oil driven type of cam tensioner i never took one fully out or apart. but i dont wanna snap my timing chain or nothing by riding like this if it is what happened. if i take the tensioner fully out can i release tension and re install it and see what happens or is the spring and oil pressure the only thing that puts the pressure on the timing chain on this model? cause if so when i took the spring out and re installed it did nothing.

i ride too much for that. id be adjusting it all the time. no reason a stock one wont work the way it was designed. just wondering if its a locking style so it cant retract when it extends out or if its a non locking style
