Okay, I guess I'm a dumbass. I've had my '98 750 for three months and still can't figure out the right way to cold start my bike. I've tried full choke, no twist of the throttle, 3/4 choke, 1/2 choke....... So please help an old monkey out and share the "secret". I've looked on YouTube and it always seem, guys just walk up, hit the starter and boom. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Re: How to cold start
What's a choke?? lol Bikes are like women what turns one on won't always turn the next one on. Have you tried no choke? I had an old nighthawk that idled so rich that it didn't ever want choke. good luck

Re: How to cold start
From what i've understood the FI bikes are fast idle and carbs are choke........When choke is on, it gives a richer mixture, by restricting the air, though if the carbs are set up right, there is rarely a need to use the choke.
In my little experience, anyway.
Will no doubt, be corrected by the guru's, if wrong!

Def need the choke around here
Also heard the choke called an enrichment circuit I believe.
FI what is that?

Re: How to cold start
It's quite complicated Chris but I shall do my bestest
You see choke is required when cold, right.
Henceforth the air is denser, so less of it is required.
By using the choke lever, you create a vacuum, which , in turn draws less air
This is all funny.....I hear more bs answer here, and on this subject in general, and I always let it go..
Ok...let's start with what the choke actually mechanically does on our mikuni carbs...and you guys who think you understand physics....and no googling allowed, take it to the next level;
You pull the choke lever
Cable operates on the ckoke slide linkage
Choke bar slides open (left)
Choke plungers open (slide left)
Now a passage is open from the vacuum chamber above the slide piston diaphragm to the carb venturi on the engine side of the mechanical butterflies
What affect does this retult is.......direct and indirect
So far no one has been close
No research.......use you f-ing mind

Re: How to cold start
Ok........first to admit, i did do a quick google.
Wish i hadn't now.
I'm gonna get my spare carbs and have a closer look at them and get back to you...
Ok...there is no fuel above the slide in that chamber....so there is no fuel coming out the choke passage....so the direct affect is NOT to add fuel.
That is your hint...
A choke does not ADD fuel....it RESTRICTS air flow....on a carb anyway. On my old single barrel 79 f150 all u had to do was put ur hand over the carb inlet to "choke" it out when it was super cold. and waalahh...she fired right up...it was just a pos rock crawler.....hence no choke cable or choke butterfly on top of carb...hope this help a little

I allways tought that the choke mechanism would allow more fuel in the same conditions.
I'm not sure why, but from what ccmhunt wrote, if there is an opening from the engine intake to the vaccum chamber, it would create more vaccum, lift the needle higher then letting more fuel in at the same rpm.
To the OP...that on the left handlebar is a fast idle, it's not a choke, altough it is used to help starting in the cold. My FI 750 has that too, and sometimes she is a bitch to start in the cold weather. Try making the pump prime two times, and blip the throttle while pressing start. Still, a bitch to start but helps a bit.
If she is very very hard to start then I would check the valves, throttle sync, and ECU repro if you are using aftermarket filter+exhaust...
