new to gixxer.com, definite buyer
Hello,
My name is pj & I'm a new rider from chicago within 3 weeks of purchasing his first bike which will undoubtedly & inarguably be an 01 gsxr 600-a bike in which I have seen eyebrow raising prices that fluctuate.we will touch on that later.
I first got bitten By the bike bug when my dad had ahis zx11 back when I was 12.I thought he was the coolest thing for him to have a bike. So as I got to college & met new people, joined organizations, etc., I was randomly called up by a frat brother one day to learn how to ride a bike. I jumped at the idea and headed right over to his place. He taught me the ins and outs on his katana 750. The moment I pulled off on that bike was the moment I made up my mind. Fast forward to today and I am about 3 weeks away from purchasing my very own.
The choice of an 01 Gixxer was not hard at all. It's fast, its a great 1st bike size as far as CCs, & I've always thought that it was the most gorgeous bike on the road. Mind made up.
Now, I'm working at Cedar Point in Sandusky Ohio searching for my Gixxer of choice in the Chicago area( something I can DEFINITELY use your help with).
now i have seen this particular bike as cheap as $2000 and as expensive as $5000 in alleged good condition. To be quite honest I do not mind a few Knicks and flaws here and there, as long as it looks and runs good overall and is reliable. What should I be paying and where would be a good place to look for a good price?

Ok, let me clarify:
I learned on a katana 750 and have been riding it daily for the better half of 2 years...I feel like anything smaller wouldn't satisfy me. I definitely respect the opinions, but I'm pretty much sold on getting the 6.I've ridden a few bigger bikes as well for a few weeks on end, 1000 Gixxer was fun, I hated the busas bulk, had fun with an 05 zx10,etc. I wouldn't exactly call myself a beginner, I'm just tired of mooching off of my frat bros & I'm ready to get my own. When I say great size I don't mean power, but fit to my body. I'm a slim guy I'm aware that my learning curve of bikes doesn't quite fit the mold, but then again everyone has different paths to their destination.

Welcome, I missed this intro but can at least tell you I paid $3K for my 2000/750. It was in great condition and I bought it from a rider near Sterling, VA.
It was my first bike and definitely not a good choice. I've since sold my bike and look forward to purchasing a track only SV650. We'll see how that plan pans out.
Around here, between 2.7k and 3.3k are typical prices for that gen bike. Hopefully you didn't get worked over too hard. Where at in the chicagoland area are ya?

Nahhh I ended up talking him down to 2.5k...... I'm currently onthe Southside of Chicago (the season finally ended @ cedar point) my next question is hat are the best spots to service ur bike or to buy accesories? My dad used to go to speedlimit and midlothian, & we were cool with all of the guys there, but those spots are long gone these days (I hate when you come back from college & everything changes)
As long as you know how to have some selfcontrol a 600 will do fine for you. I started on an SV650 and while it was fun it wasn't what i was looking for so i upgraded to the 750. So far i love it. Its a beast and it will kill me in a sec if i dont pay it respect but they are awesome bikes. have fun man.
