bike runs rough at low rpm (not herky jerkies)

Started noticing the bike running rough around idle at lights today. As my ride progressed it got so bad that I stalled out at a light, which I haven't done since my squid days. I noticed that it s sounded really throaty and choppy at low rpm cruising, almost like continuous back firing.. It a would act up a around 3500 rpm in 1st, 4500 rpm in 2ND, but clear up at higher rpm. I got gas from a different station last ride, so bad gas? I put it into dealer mode and got no codes, and tps is perfect. It has slip-on, TRE, and SET valve mod Any ideas?

The plugs are the originals, so I'm probably due. Should I drain the gas as well to eliminate that from the equation? Any good plug recommendations?

Any new brand will do fine. Iridiums, if you want them to last.

You could drain the gas out for piece of mind, but I doubt your problem is just bad gas. Hell, I've never gotten bad gas in my 20 years on the road whether in my truck or on my motorcycle.

Thumbs up Re: bike runs rough at low rpm (not herky jerkies)

Thanks for all of the input. I'm going to order some plugs and hopefully resurrect the beast.

Well I just put in new plugs and it sounds as bad as it did before. Any other ideas?

Clogged fuel filter or lines?

Definitely check your fuel filter. Also run some injector cleaner just in case your getting bad injection at those specific RPMs. Let us know what you find out.

Re: bike runs rough at low rpm (not herky jerkies)

So I pulled my fuel pump apart. The mesh filter was dirty and my bottom collection area had some debris in it. I cleaned both out and reinstalled. Problem remains. I have a sound clip and pics but not sure how to share. Are injectors next logical area? I put my hand on the exhaust and could feel the choppy airleaving it when revving

Going by your first post that says the bike does not idle well but performs OK at higher power my first guess would be an intake leak. You might want to check the throttle body syncronization.
Second guess might be an injector that is not closing properly. (not able to meter the really small amount of fuel at idle)

Re: bike runs rough at low rpm (not herky jerkies)

All day between sales calls I saw guys riding in south Jersey, so I got home from work and decided to get my bike figured out. I drained the rest of my fuel and let my bike burn the miniscule amount left in my pump. I then added 2 cups of gas from my gas can and rode to the gas station. My bike was running well the whole trip. I added injector cleaner and topped off. Ride home was smooth. I guess I know where NOT to get gas now. All that hassle because of bad gas.

Glad you got it fixed. I thought someone had suggested bad gas earlier by was mistaken. It is always good to do the simple things first.

Re: bike runs rough at low rpm (not herky jerkies)

that happened to me recently too. I had bad gas and the plugs went out because of it. Gave me a sputter and random misfire. New plugs, injector cleaner and new gas, good as new. Glad that's all it was. I wondered if my TRE was responsible so I took it off at the same time. never needed it back on and havnt really noticed a difference other then knowing what gear I am in again is nice

I thought my TRE was the problem so I yanked the fuse but it still acted up. I wonder how much of a difference the TRE makes. I do notice a lot more backfiring while its on.
