runs rough after 20-30min

hey guys, having some issues with the streetfighter srad. it runs strong until it's totally warmed up. once it's warmed up, the idle is rough and it bogs down in the lower rpms. it just generally runs like crap. i was wondering if it could be something electrical, perhaps the stator? i can't think of anything other than wires that would be greatly affected by heat.

any ideas would be super appreciated.

sounds possibly related to electronics.. grab a multimeter and measure voltage at idle, should be above 12 volts.. stators are usually solid unless you run with a bad battery or r/r (rectifier regulator).. if it turns out you need a new r/r search on mosfet in this forum

Re: runs rough after 20-30min

so i dug into the wiring harness and found that several of the wires coming out of the r/r melted, one was disconnected. at this point the bike still fired up though. i reconnected all the bad wiring with new wires and now it won't start. i get power to all the lights & instruments, and the starter spins and spins but it won't fire. i've got a new r/r coming to me via ebay but am concerned that might not be the entire problem.

any ideas?

Its a 99, put it in dealer mode and see if you have error codes.

Does it EVER try to fire?

ah, does the trouble code show up in the instrument panel? if so, i'm at a loss because i don't have any of the stock instrument cluster.

Yikes, no cluster might make it a little harder to figure out.

Lets start with the basics:
1) Does the fuel pump prime when you the bike on?
2) Do you have a good charge on the battery (how many volts at the battery when you crank on it)?
3) Did you change or move ANYTHING other then the wires for the R/R?
4) did the bike have any other issues before this R/R problem?

Re: runs rough after 20-30min

How do I check if the fuel pump is priming? Can't say I've ever heard anything engage, other than a click at the rear of the bike when the key goes on.

Getting just under 12v on the battery

Didn't touch anything else that I'm aware of

The only other issue was the 'running crappy after warming up' that I think was due to the r/r going bad. 'specially after finding those charred wires.

Re: runs rough after 20-30min

Okay , thx for the advice! I started checking the fuses and sure enough, the fuel pump fuse had gone! Quick trip to the store and a new r/r and we'll be golden again! (hopefully)
