Is this a homemade mid pipe?
Replacing the cat with a straight pipe WILL give you significantly more power in the upper rpms, but it WILL affect to some extent the lower rpm power range. This is always true with any exhaust.
To help with this problem, you should remove the SET valve, and do the PAIR mod. This will most likely reduce or eliminate the backfiring. A PC3 wouldn't be a bad idea either. Without these, your bike will run like crap, in reality it would be performing better with the stock setup. You are restricted in some areas, and free in others.... your setup is working against itself.
Do you still have the stock headers? Do you have an eftermarket pipe? You might as well do a full exhaust system, if you are going to eliminate your cat.
Not to mention your exhaust will smell horrible as you have no emission control....and don't plan on passing any tests if you have that planned for the future.
Is this a street or track bike? For the street, removing the cat sucks, unless of course you are already riding your bike to its fullest and you need that few extra horsepower
Anyhow good luck, and if you are gonna do some of the exhaust, just do it right and do all of it.
