Brake upgrade on K4 Thou

I managed to crack one of my callipers while attempting to change brake pads Since I'm gonna have to source a second hand replacement one, is there a newer model bike which callipers I could opt to source so that I can improve the braking eg. calipers off a K7 perhaps? Can someone give me the implications of such a upgrade, is it a simple bolt on, and will the brakes be better? And is it worth while to swop the master cylinder while I'm at it?

Re: Brake upgrade on K4 Thou

No, its not too easy. The k4 1000 can interchange exactly with only the 04/05 600/750 calipers. The k3 1000 calipers fit, but they are 4 pads per caliper, and thus, much more expensive to maintain.

I just did a switch to the k5 1000 calipers which bolt right on, but need a bigger diameter rotor(ie you have a 300mm rotor, and they need a 310mm). I was able to source a set of rotors from an SV 1000, and they are the only310mm rotors that mount up to our wheel pattern. So if you can find that combo, you are golden.

I just did this to my k4, along with a 19x20 brembo master cylinder, spiegler brake lines, and a set of carbonne lorain pads. Braking is once again exciting and precise. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the advice!! I will defnitelly be going down this route then. Will the K7 1k callipers also work? Are they the same or better than the k5 callipers?

Here's the definitive post on what fits with what. Say thanks to the dude, because it had to be a massive undertaking to compile all this stuff!

I don't think swapping to a different year of calipers is worth the trouble unless it saves you money. I've heard the upgraded MC is a decent benefit but have not tried it myself.

True, no real difference on the caliper, but the bigger rotors help.

Not sure what all fits what, but if some of the new monoblock Tokicos will go on they may be a slight improvement, they do weigh less and look cool. Brembo master is a GREAT upgrade!

Re: Brake upgrade on K4 Thou

Any 108mm spaced caliper will bolt to the leg (basically all modern japanese sportbikes). The problem as was mentioned is that your stock rotor is only 300mm. Newer GSXRs use 310mm rotors, some other bikes use 320mm rotors.

If I'm not mistaken 01-04 GSXR 1000 front rotors are all interchangeable. So if you found a cheap set of rotors off an earlier gen 100 (01-02 are 320mm) you could interchange them with your.

If you have a larger rotor its quite easy to source the proper spacers to make the caliper fit. Here's my K5 1000 with R6 calipers on it. They are lighter than GSXR calipers and are monoblock, got em for $50 on ebay. They just needed 3mm spacers to fit the rotors properly.

Re: Brake upgrade on K4 Thou

Thanks for all the input. Managed to get hold of a set of 320mm wave rotors and K6 calipers. Also fitted spacers on the calipers to accommodate the bigger rotors. Also fitted braided hoses. Haven't tested it yet, but hope it's better!!
