Go ahead laugh at my security idea

Just picked up a GSXR 750 and I am in love with it. I've been reading thread after thread about bikes being stolen, dropped etc. I get attached to my vehicles so this is a huge concern for me. I live in a high theft area and I'm losing sleep over this. I live in an apartment with no garage or possibility of bringing it inside (stairs). So after thinking and researching for hours and hours. It's obvious that it's way to risky to leave the bike outside without any type of anchor (Nothing to tie to) regardless of all the locks and alarms I put on it.

It's 430 am here is my crazy idea

Buy a van ( thinking caravan, Astro I can find one for 1500 ) Insure it alarm it and stick the bike inside. This van could do double duty as I take my grandmother out sometimes and it would be nice if she could bring her electric wheel chair with her as well in the van.

What do you guys think? It's late sorry if this completely idiotic.

I plan on moving to an area with a garage, but I have to wait my lease out.

Re: Go ahead laugh at my security idea

so now you have to insure 2 vehicles. your bike without theft, will not be covered in a van that has theft. just the price of the van will be given back. get an alarm/gun/monkey/grenade etc. it will be easier.

Climate controlled storage unit with 24 hr surveillance. Pain in the ass to have to drive somewhere to pick up your bike, but beats the hell out of having to drive everywhere because your bike got jacked.

I'm also a proponent of the garage/shed/storage unit over a van. You'd have to strap your bike everytime you'd drive the van. If not it's still just sitting outside, same situation as before you bought the van.

Unless you have another car and would only need to drive the van if you were transporting your bike in it. Even then it's still probably the worst option.

Thinking outside the box. I like it. Have to get a cargo van though. Windows in the rear will allow "prying eyes".

I would sit down and figure the costs of getting theft insurance, renting a storage unit, and buying the van (w/ plates, insurance, ect figured in) to see which is going to be the most cost effective. I'll give you props for trying to find a creative solution though.

Makes me glad I live outside of town. I can leave stuff laying wherever I want and never have to worry about it not being there when I get home.

Why just not full coverage with gap coverage. Bike gets stolen, who cares, you go buy another one. I have had 2 stolen so far, but now I have a garage to park it in at night.

Re: Go ahead laugh at my security idea

I actually don't know if it is such a bad idea. I lived in L.A. and had just about every bike I ever owned stolen. The van would give you a place to put the bike out of sight without having to own or pay for an enclosed garage, which in some areas, is not a sure bet anyway.

If I'd had a van to park the bike inside, I would have done it for sure. Alarming the van would be better than alarming the bike. You can put a big ol ringing bell alarm on that.

Surely full insurance a good chain to a solid object and an alarm with a pager would be more cost effective and easier.

put your bike in a Storage Unit until you find an apartment with a garage.

True. Rent an alarmed storage unit. And post the trained monkey there to guard it

Re: Go ahead laugh at my security idea

Alarms with pagers don't work well in many apartment buildings. If they do work, too many false alarms. A torch will take care of any lock. If they can see it, and have a couple of minutes to work on it, they will take it. But if it is insured, and you are not too sentimental about the machine, I guess you are protected against the financial hit.

full coverage ins. has got to be cheaper than buying a van and insuring it along with your bike.

Re: Go ahead laugh at my security idea

Full coverage insurance would make the most sense. By the time you buy a van, register it, insure it and insure the bike......well it just not such a great idea.

Some of the greatest youtube vids. that is hilarious!!!!!

Re: Go ahead laugh at my security idea

Well I considered a storage unit, but the nearest one is pretty far away from me and since I don't have another vehicle it would be a pain. And yes the van wouldn't be my daily it would just be used for the bike to sit in and taking out my grandmother from time to time. I wouldn't even have to pay for insurance or registration . I already have full coverage as well that is the first thing I did. Funny videos

Re: Go ahead laugh at my security idea

So you would drive the van around with no insurance or registration?
