carbureted 1000 swap ....

Using an 01-02 GSXR 1000 motor potentially. I do not mind carbs and love the simplicity. The bike will be a carbed 97 SRAD 750 so it will already have the petcock tank and the motor will fit with some welded brackets.
I see people use Flastides on FI race bikes but I don't have intentions of Flatsides and would rather use standard mikuni carbs(possibly the SRAD ones or 1100). I know you can use the FI 98-99 SRAD 750 motor in a carbed model bike but is it possible to do the same with the FI 1000 motor? Am I overlooking a major issue. I am not sure about the CDI box and the jetting might be a trial and error to make the most power. I am not a master builder looking to take on a monster project but I would like a newer motor with less miles and more power is always welcome.
Thoughts on this undertaking? I searched the net but nothing specifically putting OEM style carbs on a FI 01-02 GSXR 1000 motor. I would be trying to use 39mm mikuni's from the SRAD unless I find something better to fit(if the SRAD's fit at all). Feedback is appreciated.

Re: carbureted 1000 swap ....

I doubt the SRAD carbs would fit since the spacing is different. IE, the 1000 motor is not as wide.

With that said, I think you are going to open a can of worms with trying to fit 750 carbs onto a 1K motor. The jetting will be out and the work to get it back into the correct tune is going to take a lot (or a good chunk of money on the dyno).

My guess is that you will still need the ECU from the 1K motor as it has all the timing and temp sensors that would be needed to make this motor run correct.

At that point, you might as well spend a bit more (likely less then you would on the dyno) and just put the FI bodies on it, call it done. No extra tuning time and you have a LOT more power then you do now.

Agree with John - you'll be much better off getting the complete setup from the 1000 right away. That works. You'll need the 1000 ECU regardless to make the engine run properly and without all the sensors it won't work.

That or you can get for example a Motec ECU which you will then have to program from the bottom up - assuming that it can run without throttle bodies.

Seriously - save yourself a lot of headache and do it right the first time. The easiest option is to find a totaled 1000 with a good engine since then you have all the hardware except the brackets.

Re: carbureted 1000 swap ....

Good info. I was just evaluating my options and I knew this would be a good place to ask. I am normally a fuel injected guy all the way but I know carbed bikes can have as little as 6 wires to run so I figured the simplicity may save me times and materials, WRONG! lol. I will keep my eyes peeled for a motor. Mine is still really strong but I konw that waiting untill you have to have to replace the motor to look would be a recipe for gettting ripped off. There is not shit for bike salvage(that I am aware of) in my area. Ebay scares me when it comes to engines but at least(and this really sucks for sellers) you can bitch, moan, and gripe and it seems that Paypal will refund your money if you are not satisfied.

I have read that I SHOULD use the 00-01 throttle bodies on the 00-04 1000 motor due to gas tank clearance with the airbox. Can anyone confrim this? or, will all 00-04 1000 throttle bodies work.
