Best 600cc and 1000cc Sportbike of all time?

I want opinions of what you think is the best 600cc and 1000cc sportbike of all time. If you really do want to include something else, such as a 750, 900, 1100cc bike that could be considered the best sportbike then by all means do. I know this is a suzuki forum, but try to be unbiased since most of you have ridden more than just the suzuki brand.

Easy answer for the 600's. CBR F series as the best all around 600.

On an historic perspective the 1986 GSX-R1100 is the king of race inspired factory street bikes.

Re: Best 600cc and 1000cc Sportbike of all time?

CBR 600 F by far is the best selling 600. As for the 1000's, who knows. Probably a toss up between the CBR900/1000 and the GSXR1100/1000. The GSXR was the first to come out with a race rep 1100 that was amazing but the 900rr was also a very special machine that set the bar for light, small and amazing power to weight ratio.

you have to be more specific. what do you mean by best? best selling? best on the race track? best on the drag strip? best for street riding?

I've heard old timers that have ridden for years, talk about when the SRAD model bikes came out in 96, they were highly praised. Of all time thats hard to call.

With regards to a sheer jump in technological and performance capabilities I would have to agree with you. Some would also say that the R1 ushered in a new era a well. But when you are talking pre and post street legal racebikes, the 1985 GSXR-750/1986 GSXR-1100 were an order of magnitude of evolution.

To equate something like that today would be like if the Ducati DesmosediciRR sold for $12K and was readily available as like your standard liter-class sportbike, not a limited production $70,000 piece of history.

Best is a subjective term relevant only to the rider who gives the praise.

Im sure some riders might choose the Gold Wing, or Fat Boy.

But some bikes in my riding career that made a huge impression on me were my Ducati 996 ( my best exotic), My 2002 R1 ( My best streetbike ) and my 2008 GSXR-750 ( best trackbike - by FAR ).

As far as a track

The SRAD did help put the gixxer back on the map when Suzuki switched to a twin spar frame and shedded much unneeded wieght. Weight that was gained from the previous water coolers. And restored the name/rep gained by the oil coolers.

As for best bikes. Any modern 600, theyre all close and pretty much the same. As street rider you probably wont tell much difference between them besides immediate feel when sitting on the bikes. It depends what you want. For best ergos and comfort Ive always heard the CBR, for best track performace/handling, the R6.

The 750s in a class all by itself. And Ive never ridden a 1000.

Edit to add this: As for ease of working on and servicing. The GSXR wins in that department.

I'm going to have to agree with this. As far as pure power, its no secret that Kawasaki brings the big motors. The 05 was essentially the same bike as 04, but with a revised transmission mated to that insane motor. That bike was making power and taking full advantage of ram air way before it's time.

I think its by far the most potent bike for its respective time period.

Not to jump on the bandwagon, but I really think the 750 platform is the best all around setup. You have a PERFECT match of power to weight without the overly brutal power of a liter bike, but the characteristics of the 600.

+1 here.

600ish handling, 1000ish power. A good compromise. A 750 is definately going to be my next bike. In 04/05 trim for sure.

Ural Patrol - the service manual / toolkit is a shoebox with a hammer inside.
