Strange problem. Electrical?

Hey guys,

I posted awhile back about my charging system problems. I have since fixed those issues but im having a few minor ones elsewhere.

Started her up this morning, was putting on some new Pazzio levers and gel grips. Wanted to run thru the checklist and see if there were any faults I was missing. So ive found two or three things.

1) The guy who had it before me had it on the track. It has an old Power Commander II on it. It is set to the leanest setting. That will cause trouble will it not? It tends to idle high, about 1500 +- 100, and will stutter.

2) When I completely close the throttle, ie. twist it until it wont go any further. It dies on idle. It will immediately drop to about 800-900 rpm and then shut off. Is that an adjustment on the throttle cable I need to make?

3) The strangest of the bunch. I turned it over and everything was fine. I decided to shut it off and change something..turn it back on and the starter button wont fire the engine. I was stumped for a min so I started messing with the turn signals and running the last electrical stuff down. I honked the horn and then hit the starter again and it fired instantly. I tested it two more times with the same thing happening. What could be the cause of it? Im assuming like a crossed wire or a short? It doesnt happen 100% of the time.

Im curious of your thoughts, comments, suggestions on this. Let me know. Thanks.

1 : on the leanest settings ? ? is there a map in it? can you download the map see what it is. also what work has been done to the bike ie air filter and pipes

2 : try adjusting the idle up on the carbs. there should be a black nob by the coolant resivoir.

3 : seems weird that it starts after you honk the worn. but if i was you i would check the conections on the front of the bike. i like to spray them all to keep corrosion away.

Re: Strange problem. Electrical?

1)It has a lcd screen on the top of the powercommander which shows if its more lean or rich mixture, i havent done much research into the older ones but it may not be as complex as the newer ones are. remember its only a v2. It has a hookup that looks like it may be for a computer but again not sure of the older style ones. Work done: It has a full yosh system on it, k&m air filter, and my mechanic said it has a cam degree change on the engine.

2) its a 99 srad so its fuel injected. There is a black knob there and I have tried adjusting it but it doesnt seem to change the idle...is it a miniscule amount or could I kill it by adjusting too much? I have turned it 5-10 times one way with no change in idle. possibly disconnected?

3)yes the horn things is very strange I will have to go back thru all the front end wiring on the bike.

This bike was not well taken care of. The original owner loved wheelies and blew a crankshaft bearing. So it has a new engine (800miles old), fork seals...etc. 2nd owner took it to the track, neglected the fact it had a charging system problem and crashed it heavly on the left side (stator). So I have been changing all these half ass parts and pieces they put on it...they had levers from a diff bike on it, the wrong rearset. They disrespected the thing.

Re: Strange problem. Electrical?

First. That LED display is not really a lean/rich view when the bike is running. It is a throttle position display. So do not worry so much about that.

The problem of idle to WOT and it stalling, that is a problem for sure. The PCII was known for a lot of problems, you might want to disconnect it and see how it runs stock.

The horn, I think your right, it sounds like a short someplace.
