anybody know anything about old FZ's?????

I recently aquired a free 1987 Yamaha FZ, but I don't know if it's a 600 or a 750. I'm leaning towards a 750 but my only clue is the factory tire sizes were a 120/80-16 frt and 130/80-18 in back (the frame tag is still there). From what I could find, the 600's has smaller rubber at both ends. The vin tags and everything are still there but there is no id markings that I could find on the motor or anywhere else.

I'm thinking of pulling the powertrain out and fabbing up an old-school bobber. There are plenty of useable parts on this thing but it has no title so resoration isn't practical (it's been wrecked anyway). Anyone know how to ID one of these things?

I'm kinda hoping it's a 750 as they made like 105hp or so. On an old ridgid that would be a hoot.punk

don't be so sure about that. My dad's fz750 had something like a 130 rear on it when he bought it. We need some pics.

The 600 and 700 have distinctly different motors. The FZ 700/750 had the cylinders canted forward at more of an angle, and they had 5 valve "Genesis" motors. But the biggest most notable difference is that the FZ600's were air cooled old school motors, while the 700/750 were liquid cooled motors...

That helps a lot! The one I have is canted WAY forward, the carbs are almost strait up and it's water cooled.

I looked on the case for a cc capacity but I couldn't find it. It actually looks exactly like the pic above, right down to the tiny little Yoshi pipe, except mine is a bit more beat up.

I'll try to get some pics this evening, I forgot that you can't post anything about a bike on here w/o pics.

Post the VIN. I can tell u exactly what it is but I think it's an FZ750.

I did a little research on the internet, what a useful thing that is (thanks Al) and based on those tire sizes, it should be a 750. Egad. The 600 had even skinnier tires.

I finally found the engine capacity mark. It would appear that I have a FZ700. Definitely not a bad bike to be stuck w/ considering the price (free )

It looks pretty rough but I guess it cranks over OK (my brothers played w/ it at some point). They never did get it started but considering the rats nest of wires that really doesn't surprise me. Anyone know where I can get a wiring diagram for one of these things?

Looks lie a Dunlop K591 on the front.

That 5-valve motor was fabulous, at least in the FZR750 I rode. Amazingly smooth and refined with power everywhere, it was more like a 900 or 1000cc.

I managed to find a wiring digram for the older model like I have. I'm not sure if it will help you or not but here it is.

On a side note: I did get the motor fired up and it seems to run good. No knocks, smoke or other signs of damage. That was a wiring DISASTER though!

i've find it too on the web but it's not the diagram for my bike because in my bike i've some relay i don't found in the diagram. i've see many diagram but nothing can help me. i'm desperate!!!!!
for example my turn relay is alone and in all diagram this is a relay assembly. to precise my bike is an old bike of police in mauritius and they have do many changement!!!!!

Yeah, it is a bit "rough around the edges"

I wouldn't exactly say I'm saving it though. I'm going to hand build a frame and use parts (eng., susp., brakes, ect.) from the Yamaha to get it going. Whatever is left of the old FZ is going to the scrap pile after I'm done. I figure I can do the whole thing and have a running bike for roughly $1000. Ought to be a good winter project.
