bike runs terrible after rain

anyone know what would cause a bike to run really poorly after being ridden in heavy rain or being hose washed...? I plan on using di-electric grease on all connectors, but is there anything else I can do to both diagnose this problem and or fix it...? This all concerning an older carbed bike.

Re: bike runs terrible after rain

Water/moisture has obviously caused a short somewhere. I would start with the SP wires & trace the short. Unfortunately unless there are obvious signs such as cracked wire shielding etc...there are not many shortcuts!

Try and dry out the bike by leaving it in the sun for a few hours with seat, tank & fairings etc...off to dry it out faster.....

Once its running again use dielectric grease as mentioned on all electrical connections to head off corrosion and shorts like this......

Re: bike runs terrible after rain

I agree need alittle more info. How is it running poorly? Missing out? Lack of power? Hard to start? Or what?

+1 to the air filter possibly getting wet. That will definitely do it.. especially if it is the stock filter.

Re: bike runs terrible after rain

its a 92 600r. And it was running at like 1/3 power and just feeling like shit, really bogging whenever you get into the throttle and breaking up. It would start and idle fine anything over 1/4 throttle it ran BAD. The air filters are k&n indiv filters and they were not wet, and maybe the spark plug boots got wet but I pulled them last time it started doing this and replaced them and it still ran poor. I unplugged every electrical connector and they we all dry the next day but still ran bad.

I am pretty confident this is an electrical prob. I check all the mechanical problems i think. And I drain the carbs and the tank and none of it helped. On the third day after we washed it, it finally started running right again. now it runs 100%. any ideas

Re: bike runs terrible after rain

Water really doesnt "short" a 12v electrical system, it may "short" something like a spark plug boot where its trying to hold in tens of thousands of volts however. I've heard water entering the fuel tank after a rain via the gas cap on some bikes, try an addtive in the fuel to rid water .

i am not so sure you are correct spitz04. I have had water reak havoc on the computor systems in my cars before. I was wondering if it could be affecting the coils or something. but i will check the sp wires and boots.

sounds like what my old bike was doing when the battery went bad.... it would start and idle fine, but went to hell when you tried to rev it... i would get your battery, and charging system checked out..

its a new battery and it runs perfect for like weeks but once it rains really hard or we wash the bike it runs bad for a day or two.
