Questions for you dyno tuner guys...

OK, someone please help me understand some things about tuning.

When you dyno guys tune say an FI Gixxer with a PC, pipe and whatever else, what are you aiming for exactly? The flattest spikefree power curve you can get? Are you aiming at at the stochiometric rate or optimal fuel/air atomization?

Do you tune for every 10% throttle position or just peak power numbers?

How do you take into account the variable effects of ram air which are not reproduced on a dyno when you tune?

I know its alot of questions but I really want to understand.

Thanks in advance....

Ummm yes is about right. They tune for a smooth power curve, at every 10% throttle opening. As far as the mixture ratio, some tune to mixture and some tune to power through the curve. It is realy two different schools of tuning, and I dont know which is more "right"

And some dynos DO have a ram air effect by having a fan blowing on the front of the bike that is relate4d to the speed the dyno registers that the bike is going I believe. The superflow dyno I had mine done on simulated the ram air effect.

Re: Questions for you dyno tuner guys...

FYI those fans do not simulate ram air very well. Even a $40k Factory e997 setup will not do that. If you want to pressurize the airbox to any precision, that is a whole other ball of wax. The fans are first and foremost there for cooling the bike.

The general goal is to tune for the application. On a streetbike, you want the widest power curve possible typically. For racing, low end power is not as important as top end (RPM-wise, not speed). A LOT depends on the tuner and their training as well.

In my case I have no training, so I'm just regurgutating what I've read elsewhere. But I've read a lot of it...

Re: Questions for you dyno tuner guys...

Said very good!

Basically, yes you want your a/f ratio to be right. A lean bike or a rich bike is not going to produce power like a bike in the proper range. Old School thinkers who use to think , "lean is mean" are wrong. At factory pro.com and Dynojet.com they explain why this is wrong.

Generally you have to tune the carbs or fi system to the intake and exhaust systems on the bike. Some are designed for more top end while others more mid range.

And no, nobody can reproduce the ram air affect for shit without spending lots of money (besides the actual factory).

Hope this helps

Also this is the key point. Remember that all dyno's are uniquie. they all need to be calibrated and set up , thus each can read different. Don't get too upset if you read posted numbers different than yours, it may be the dyno, not your bike. If you do mods and need to go back to the same dyno for comparison.

Can somebody explain why it's not as simple as hooking up a big fan and blowing it at the front of the bike in a speed proportional to the throttle opening? After all, a wind tunnel is just a big fan. The only difference I see is in the real world the bike moves at the air and in a wind tunnel the air moves at the bike. What if I drive my bike into a headwind?

Tune to stoich. If you tune it to max power...Well they say if you're running lean, your car/bike will never run better than the 1/2 minute before it blows.

this is contradictory because stoich is 14.7:1, which is good for idle, but extremely lean for making power at higher rpms. at higher rpms you should be around 11.5:1 - 12:1 max.

a good tuner will tune for the smoothest, flatest power curve possible.

Re: Questions for you dyno tuner guys...

Well I have read all these posts and now I know that I know sweet FA about tuning and dynos.
Just had my bike on a dyno before a service (might read better now it has been serviced but I doubt it) came back reading about 85hp .
Is there anything i can do to at least put this somewhere near what it should be without doing loads of insurance cost increasing mods?

Re: Questions for you dyno tuner guys...

a coustom map around here is about $200. You have to remove the pair mod cause it sends all the extra unburnt gasses out the exhaust pipe instead of back into the air box to be recycled. A dyno has a sensor that reads the air/fuel ratio at the exahaust opening. I think this is correct.??
