My brother is a marine and he is going to Japan for 3 years. He has a 750 that is just going to be sitting there for a long time so I asked him if I could have it.
He said yes assuming I get my motorcycle license. So needless to say I'm going to be getting the permit next week and taking the MSF course the week after.
I'm a level headed guy and speeding on a bike scares the Sh*t out of me. I come to you knowledgeable vets for any advice and tips you can provide me!
I too was level headed guy and I thought speeding on a bike scared the Sh*t out of me too. But having a bike has in fact awakened the speedy teenager in me again so it's track days for me.
You can't beat a free bike, just be safe, learn to ride sensibly, and get some good gear.

in terms of gear, which is better? nylon jacket or leather?

**Warning** Your about to get FLAMED from many people about having such a big bike as your first...Don't let them get to you!...However, as you said yourself..Your level headed, so you got a HUGE step in the right direction. What year is it?? If you can...give us a pic . Just take your time....and if you know any of your brothers friends that ride in your area, ask to tag along. And be sure to ask your brother TONS of questions about riding. As far as gear goes...I roll leather, I've asked many people about the differences. Some say composite jackets protect just as good...some say they will MELT TO YOUR BODY if you go down...My MSF instructor here in Alaska states that he has PERSONALLY seen a mesh jacket melt to a mans arm...thats all the convincing I needed! However, if it's super hot where you live...might be a good choice. I know when I was riding in AZ...I wanted one SO bad, but just didn't trust them. Maybe they are better now...but around 4 years ago when I was in the market...they were 'ify'...my .02..

leather for me, I rode around all day today (mid 90's) and yes it was hot in a black leather jacket and gloves but I like my skin to much to not wear it. I consider this to be my first real season on a "real" bike. I ride with a good rider that is one of my best friends and Im sure that he get tired of me asking questions all the time but thats the only way your going to learn and progress. I feel that I am a better rider because I had someone to show me the ropes, so I'd say find someone experienced to ride along with too.
Just always wear your Gear, When your first starting out that means Helmet, Jacket, a good pair of boots that are over the ankle and Gloves, maybe some good pants too. Learning curve is a bit rough on a bike
Came out of retirement to "catch" for a bunch of 20-24 year old men!

Maybe good pants? The first thing that usual hits the ground first is your legs, ass and hands. Definitely good leather pants or full suit.
Take a trackday school or some kind of training dude, trust me that bike's no joke and like the other guy said.... level headedness means shit on these things, only experience counts..... fistfuls of throttle or brakes or steering imputs will throw you on your ass since you don't know the proper way to do them yet

I think having a level head (using common sense, good judgement and not let exterior sources affect your decision making) is very important, at least initially. The level head is whats going to keep me alive in my initial riding career, and i hope experience will keep me alive for the rest of it

no pics yet but I know that its yellow. not sure of the year of the bike.
unfortunately my brother is in NC and I live in MA, so I'll be starting from scratch, after the course I'd really like to meet up with some people that have been riding for a while that can show me some ins and outs of riding.
Ironhead is SPOT-ON about the pants thought...I still squid out and ride with out them sometimes. I got some pants from ICON, they seem to be "sturdy" enough to do the job if you need them to. So if you have a bit of a budget saved up going into this...spend it on gear...don't worry about accesories (performance) for the bike...that thing is more than enough balls stock. Like others have said before, take your classes, and if there are 'advanced' classes available after your first classes are over...take those too. Really get into it...My first bike was a 750 as well, and I knew NO ONE in AZ who rode. So I read as much as I could about riding, watched as much youtube as my eyes could stand, subscribed to EVERY magazine I could get my hands on, even some UK ones. Do your homework, and you'll be fine. Take it slow....WAY SLOW...Oh, and while your at the MSF course, make some new friends, and if your instructor is cool, see if you can meet up with him on a ride one day...even offer to pay him. Ours up here is super cool...He's a Harly guy, but he's still alot of fun. I catch up with him all the time when I'm out and about, and we roll out together. Again...taker' slow...listen to what people have to tell you...and be confident in yourself. You'll be fine.

looks like mine ( '01 750 ) mine's a Black/silver/red one. not quite sure what the body differences were between '01-'03.
+1 on gear and classes, Also check out motorcyclejournal.com they have some pretty good "How's it done" video's on there. Just ride safe, wear your gear and have fun.
