The other day I was trying to take off the carbs so that i could clean them. When I was almost done, i was at the part where you have to stick the phillips screw driver in the holes to take off the carbs, i realized i didn't have a phillips that long, But during all this I was also playing with the throttle cables, the push and pull cables. I needed the bike later on the day, so I put everthing together again. It started fine the first time, i took it about a feet before it stalled and died. And it wouldn't start. I smelled gasoline, so i left it there figuring it would all just leak out the carbs. But the smell was there for an hr and gas started leakin on the ground. I opened it and the carbs were filled to the brim with gas, any one know how this coulda happened. Now I try to start the bike, all I hear is a click, I thought it was battery so i tried jump starting it, but all it would do is go click, the noise seems to be ocming from the batey. Anybody know what the problem. Thanks
I had the same thing happen to me, though not as fast as your describing it.
Mine was from a bad petcock, wich intern let gas leak out and fill up the carbs (starten with the left on, dont know why?) That could be it.
Also, did u hook all the hoses back up, and to the right spot. If u hooked the vacum line up wrong on the petcock, then that could be maken it pump more gas out. I dunno. It just seems weired that you would be worken on the carbs, and then somehow have the petcock go bad.
Did u take them apart at all, or did u not end up getten um off the bike.
Take off your main fuel hose and see if gas still comes out the tank(like slowly drains), if it does, bad petcock. If not, recheck all the vacum lines.

ohh, and u might have to take the carbs out and suck some gas out of the head.
I had this SAME thing happen to a R6 I was working on. You need to take the float bowls off and make sure that you dont have a stuck float. It happens sometimes when you tip the carbs on there side...
Then you need to find a way to get the gas out of the motor, and it should turn over ok. you might need to take the plugs out and turn the motor over to get the extra fuel out.
I've cleaned the gas from the carbs, its all out now. Now there is an electrical problem. You know how when you turn the switch on the bike and you hear a little whining noses coming from the bike, my bike doesn't do that anymore. So the bike won't even try to start, it just goes "click" when you try to start it.
The mototr is no longer flooded. It is now electrical, I've checked the fuses and battery and their ok, usually when i turn the switch on right before i start it there is a winding noise that last about two or three seconds which shows that their is enough power to start the bike. Now the bike won't even try to start, it just goes "click" like it is the battery, but it isn't because i've checked it numerous times.

that whining noise is your fuel pump... the fact that its NOT whining leads me to believe that its a prob related to your fuel pump... maybe you hooked your lines back up wrong...
I've gotten my bike to start up now. It was the starter, i took it apart and took out the main sprocket and started it and saw it spin, so i figured that it was just stuck so i kept hitting it with a broomstick and starting it at the same time and now it is fine. Thanks guys.
I'm having that same problem, my bike started 2 days ago but when I tried to start it yesterday it would click 1 time and thats it. it's not the battery, so could it be the starter?

it must be the start.. the teeth in the starter might be jammed or something.. use a metal stick or rod and have someone hit the starter at the same time as you are starting up the bike.. tell us what happens next..
thats what was wrong with mine, i had jumper cables connected to my car, and my bro was hitting the starter with a broom stick, and i tried starting, and it just started. Its fine now, tell me how it goes....
I HAD SOME TROUBLE WITH MY 97 NOT WANTING TO START.IT DID THE SAME CLICK AND STOP.I TRIED EVERYTHING TESETED STARTER,PUSH STARTING,CHECK COILS,JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING.I FOUND OUT LATER THAT THE FUEL COCK WAS BAD AND STAYING OPEN.LETTING GAS FLOOD THE CARBS AND CYLINDERS AND THE BIKE WAS HYDRO LOCKED.TAKE OUT THE SPARK PLUGS AND TRY TO START IT.IT WILL SHOOT GAS OUT OF THE PLUG TUBES IF IT IS HYDROED.DONT LET THE PLUG WIRES GROUND OUT WHILE DOING THIS AND DONT GET THEM MIXED UP.IF THIS SEEMS TO BE THE PROBLEM SEND ME A MESSAGE AND ILL TELL YOU WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO FIX IT.IT WILL COST ABOUT $100..I THINK..I DID MINE A FEW MONTHS AGO..I SPEND SO MUCH ON MY BIKE I CANT REMEBER EVERYTHING..
I took the starter cover off and took out the main sprocket and push the ignition button and the starter motor was spinning but when I put the sprocket back in and try to start it I just get a hard click and thats it, need help ASAP.
