Question What's the best way to remove oil residue from tires?

So I picked up some oil on my fairly new tires and went down yesterday. They are REALLY slick now. What is the best way to clean up the tires? I thought about brake cleaner and a rag, but I'm really gun shy now and not sure if I want to introduce chemicals to the side of the tires.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Brake cleaner will dry the rubber out and casue cracking. Since it's a fairly new tire I'd look for another way. Maybe some Dawn or something. Works good for getting oil off of your hands, I dunno.......
I nearly bit it last year from oily crap on my tire. I cleaned it off w/ brake cleaner and low and behold, there's cracks in the tire this year.

I know acetone/mineral spirits works well at getting the releasing agent off, don't know about oil though. Doesn't the rubber absorb the oil?

Maybe you could try some Simple Green mixed with dawn dish detergent. I've seen them use Simple Green at the track to clean up nasty oil spills...should work on tires and it's non-toxic.

go get a bottle of simple green concentrate, empty a cup or two into a bucket fill with water, and then get to scrubbing.

Yup, simple green is your friend. Use a bucket of hot water from the sink and pour the green stuff in. Depending on how much oil, dilute as needed. It's pretty concentrated, so wear gloves or your skin will start getting tingly. With a large brush, start scrubbing.

I use Dawn, as it does not muck up the white on your wheels or plastic. I have had simple green leave white wheels a little discolored in the past.

Re: What's the best way to remove oil residue from tires?

Last night I actually scrubbed them with Simple Green, and rinsed well, but it still left my tires a little slick. So I used brake cleaner to get that off. MAN was there a lot of crap on those tires. The towels I used are completely black. The tires look in good shape now, though.
