500cc alcohol two stroke go-kart

I was going through some old stuff (old to me!), and found this....I thought some of you gear heads might be interested..

500cc (yz490) heavily ported using a mikuni 44mm carb converted to alcohol. The needle in the carb was made from 1/8" stainless welding rod and turned on a lathe 1/4" at a time. the frame is 4130 chromoly with 7075 aluminum structural support around engine. There is a spring loaded wheelie bar in the rear to control wheelies at speeds below where the front wing starts to work (65 mph or so).

on an 1/8th mile, we were doing 9 second lap times, and on the quarter mile we were doing 11 second lap times, hitting about 115 on the straights...

I miss that thing!!!

Re: 500cc alcohol two stroke go-kart

that kart was, but I also raced (more recently) 125cc shifterkarts on pavement tracks around a mile long with 10-15 turns. I raced pro (SKUSA Superpro) in 2002, but it is stupid expensive.

Wow, that brings back memories, thanks for the pic. I started in Horstman gold cup at about 12 running a Margay Laguna with a B&S block. Eventually graduated to a Coyote Bullet full mod running on methanol. Had to bolt lead plates all over the frame to make weight. At 16 it was nearly impossible for me to learn to drive on the street with all that track experience.

Re: 500cc alcohol two stroke go-kart

I just saw it here and the other thread. It is deffinately a beast of a machine

I would have loved to drive it .

My Bro-in-law used to race dirt oval go-carts when I first met dilly, but he got out of it shortly after and I never got to drive it

Re: 500cc alcohol two stroke go-kart

Yeah, we had a cop out to that track one night (1/8th mile oval), and he was radaring us. coming off the corner were going about 40, and we would hit 78-80 just about the time we would chuck it sideways, and that was all happening in under 2 seconds. I've never felt anything pull like that...it would blur your vision!

I live in FL!! .... and for what it is worth, during the 90's when we were doing that, we searched for years to find some other people with comparable machines and never found something quite like what we built. There were some guys with 500's but they were in mini sprints so they were heavy. That kart with me in it was 315 lbs!
