Removing Paint from Fairings..

I am going to be doing some repainting this winter and was looking for an easy way to remove the paint from the fairings.... well, acetone is out and so is conventional paint stripper.. So I was doing a bit of searching the web and found out that
EASY OFF OVEN CLEANER does the trick and does NOT affect the ABS....

Sorry if someone posted this already.. just thought it was interesting...

I'm not a bodywork person, but I would think you would sand it. Anything else and you would be sorry. Easyoff works for taking anodizing and paint off metal, but I've never heard of anyone using it on bodywork.

Re: Removing Paint from Fairings..

i painted my bike and if you sand 600, 800 then 1000 , 1500 wet, 2000 wet then it will be good, 600 and 800 are to remove the paint lines.....

leave most paint on dont sand down to plastic......as when you do your sealant (Primer) it will hold better to the layers of factory paint........as their factory paint sealer (primer) is bonded way better to the plastic then the average home painter can do anyways

Re: Removing Paint from Fairings..

you only sand your decals off and even out multi painted layers. Painting ABS plastic is a bitch,

1. first you must sand the surfaces with 220 grit
2. you must seal the plastic surface and bare paint surfaces with a good plastic sealer. Note the paint thinners will attack any areas that show the original finish or bare plastic areas, and if you ship this step you finish will instantly lift or blister in this area. The sealer is called a plastic sealer.
3.Once the sealer is applied you can use a laquer primer or 2 part enamel prior.
4. then you apply the base color coat.
5. then the clear coat.

note you can skip the clear coat if you use a solid 2 part enamel color such as black, red, green etc.

Basically you have to follow the exact steps as painting a 1985-2007 corvette as there is alot of ABS plastic on them. Just tell the guy at the paint shop that you are afraid of the new paint blistering the abs plastic or paint and they can hook you up with the right sealer.
