Exclamation 94 GSXR 1100 ignition ?

My tach drops to 0 then bounces back up when I'm on the highway. I thought it may be a carb issue. But when this happens I can downshift and open the throttle up and I have no problem, that is until I let off the throttle. It really bucks when this happens. It's not fun doing 90 and your bike shuts down for a split second and then resumes the speed and then shuts down again. Talk about getting jerked around. Talked to a Suzuki service manager who said it sounds like ignition. But of corse he wouldn't go any further into what to check. So any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Re: 94 GSXR 1100 ignition ?

Igniter boxes don't actually fail all that often. They are fairly robust. The coils can be problematic, but tend not to do the sudden on/off thingie. What can result in this is a leak between the #3 carb intake runner and the gas petcock. The number three carb supplies the vacuum which 'runs' the stock petcock. Does it still do this on the Prime setting? If not, then for sure its the vacuum line etc.. Good luck!

The boxes might not fail often, but the connectors on them and the loom sure can. They're not very well hidden from the elements and water can be flung up onto it from the rear wheel (just take a look at where it is from underneath!) so personally I'd check the connectors there for corrosion..

I tried running the bike on prime setting and it does the same thing. I havent had time to check the connectors for corrosion.

Thanks for the help

Re: 94 GSXR 1100 ignition ?

Hi,

try check your side stand and the side stand switch, also check your interlock systems. and dont forget the logic diode.

same thing happened to me last year, i checked everything (including ignitor box) and the problem was just with the side stand and the side stand switch. when i pull 90mph the tacho drops zero and came back to normal in split seconds. it was happened because the roads were bumpy so the side stand did't touch the side stand switch properly when i rode on a bumpy roads..

Re: 94 GSXR 1100 ignition ?

id check the small diode on the left side of the bike just below the seat too.. where the neutral and side stand connectors are.. happened something similar to me once, check that its clean and not covered in a greenish gunk like mine was..

Re: 94 GSXR 1100 ignition ?

Intermittantly means its electric and like Dave said, start w/ routine cleaning of all the connector plugs w/ spray electrical connector cleaner (avail at any autoparts store). If it's the ECU, it'll do it all the time. Suggestion of the kickstand switch makes sense, check the spring on it to make sure it isn't sprung. If it is and the kickstand is able ot bounce up and down at speed, the switch will open and close momentarily and shut the motor down, and then allow it to restart from compression as the switch closes again when teh stand comes back up the full upright position. That makes more sense than anything. If you've got a stand (or have someone help hold the bike upright) put the kickstand up and then press down on it w/ a single finger. If it moves w/out much effort, the spring is shot and needs to be replaced. Not something we ever give much thought to, but given that the kickstand switch controls the juice to the coils, it's something that has to be routinely checked.

Re: 94 GSXR 1100 ignition ?

I checked the side stand and it is tight. I've cleaned the connectors on the right side of the bike(the yellow and black connectors) both had some corrosion. Still have same issue. When the tach bounces back and forth, I can pull the clutch in and rev the engine or I can down shift and open the throttle up and everything is fine. It's just when your cruising around 5500 RPM it happens. I also cleaned the carbs thinking it may be a jet. Nope, it wasn't.Thanks for all of your help.

Re: 94 GSXR 1100 ignition ?

Carbs won't contribute to the tach dropping to zero. Electricity cutting out will. Did you check the little switch on the kickstand? It's a momentary switch. When the kickstand is up (or neutral when the stand is down), the circuit is closed, allowing power to the coils. When the kickstand is down and the bike is physically in any gear other than neutral, the switch opens the power circuit to the coils and cuts off electricity.

Re: 94 GSXR 1100 ignition ?

my SV did that in the middle of my experimental jetting days. had 162 mains, and it ran great until i'd let it sit @ about 6500 rpm's for about a minute. the motor would briefly shut down, kill the tach, and backfire as it jumped back into action. it was running way too rich in that range, and it seemed to foul the plugs for a second. dropped it back to the 157.5's and never had the problem again, until i rode to south dakota and was in the higher elevations, where it would foul again. i rejetted my bike on I-90 miles from anywhere, and i mean bumfuck wyoming.
sounds like the same problem.

Had sort of a similar issue, and it was caused by the kill-switch in the kick stand. The spring had gotten loose and would allow the stand to come down slightly when I would hit a bump while accelerating, triggering the engine kill...

Hope this helps.
