Help - electrical - rear lights, speedo light..front lights

Hello - am after a bit of help - i have done a few searches. Let me tell you the symptoms..

The rear position lights seemed to stop working - i initially thought it was blown bulbs. I replaced these and the lights are still not working. Also the speedo light is not working. ## the brake lights do work ##

I thought that this would then be the fuse - I have checked and the fuses are all intact (the fuse box behind the headlights)

Whilst fiddling - my headlight has now stopped working as well! aaarggggghhhhh - it hasn't blown.

So - where are the relays ? How can I check if they are fine. Also - anyone have any ideas what I can check or what the problem is!? Thanks. Paul.

If you replaced fuses an bulbs I'd say check the relay next (though it seems odd that the brake lights work and nothing else). If you look at the fuse block, the little cover where the fuses are under, look directly forward of that (while sitting on the bike) on the same chunk of plastic there is another box. That is your relay.

my gauge lights/ tail running light wasn't working and it was the fuse so not sure on your problem, try that relay.

Hmm, based on what Gixxer750Kid said... if you try a relay and it doesnt work, check the wiring itself, its very possible that the wire that goes to the fuse/relay block for those lights is cut or corroded or whatever.

One question, did they just stop working? cause it sounds like some loose wires that are shorting or something since the headlights just stopped working.

It could also be a bad ground wire or conection, since they all went at the same time

Thanks for all your replies - I tried everything suggested - still nothing - then it hit me - i hadn't checked or played with the actual switch that controls the lights! Bingo !!!!! everything back to normal - i posted this incase anyone does a search on this sort of thing in the future..at least there is a result now!

Re: Help - electrical - rear lights, speedo light..front lights

I have a very similar problem but i'm not too good with taking things apart. A month ago, my speedo light went out, a week before my tach light went out, yesterday i noticed one of my headlights had gone out .. at this point the working lights on the bike would be the one headlight ( 99 suzuki gixxer 750) , the tail light and the turn signals.

I checked the fuses in the fuse box and they all look good to me ( no discoloration or burn)

if this is caused by water/moisture getting into the area behind the headlights, what do you think the chances are .. of all this happening

i want to try and fix this myself coz the mechanic says he's charge me starting 90 bucks to check the wiring harness and I don't have that much. The last option I want to try is only taking it back to the mechanic if the wires have gone bad ( having checked all other possible options to your recommendations)

and where is the relay again?

are you sure your lights just aren't burning out? since they didn't go out at the same time? do both your lights work when your high beams are on?

a friend of mine told me the same thing as you this evening.. of the two H4 headlamps only one works and that too in high beam but if you switch to low beam, both don't work :confused

i changed a couple of fuses just for the heck of it and it made all the lights that function glow pretty bright now..

i just ordered a couple of bulbs for the speedo/tach gauge and one H4... i'm not sure if i can take off the front fairing ( pls tell me if I can ) straight off without taking off the side fairings ( i will have to think about taking the frame sliders off first... )

appreciate the help

You can take the whole front piece off by just removing the 3 bolts on each side (two on the side plastics and one by the ram air) then remove the one bolt on each side that holds the stabilizer to the frame from there you should just be able to pull it up over the gauges but you will need to pull the two headlight connections off first. I think that's all there is too it, it's not too hard or anyhting.

thanks kid, i guess the bulbs should be here in a couple days. by the bolts that hold the stabiliser frame do u mean the ones thats on the inside? ( i dropped the damn screw for the fuse box while i was unscrewing it .. i guess its somewhere in there between the frames ) but thanks man.. i will update on what transpires soon !

The fairing stabilizer, that's the only thing I know to call it, where it bolts to your frame and then it runs up to your mirrors you can ether unbolt the mirrors or unbolt it from your frame.

Not exactly a good pic but you see where the stabilizer it broken off the bottom of it is still there and those are the bolts I'm talking about (not the Ohlins )

you might want to check the front harness. particulary where your left fork is rubbing on the harness. my bike did the same thing but i would blow a fuse eventually. i found a tiny slice on a small light green wire that went to the sig/fuel relay. the wire's were getting frayed creating resistance. just un wrap the front harness and start looking for the pronblem wires. im sure youll find them

cool.. so i got my speedo bulb and a halogen H4. I tried taking the fairing off man and i got so close till i couldn't unscrew the couple of screws from the inside thats holding the front cowl. (right under the speedo and tacho, not the ones they're held up with) and i don't have a tool that has the reach or capability.. i think i'm gonna have to take this in.. i wish i had a good front wheel it'd have done my rotors a hell lotta good but too late now..

one last advice needed for now... i have one new H4 bulb for the headlights and the other working H4 goes only high beam.. figure i shud get another H4 to replace it while i'm at it anyway?

Re: Help - electrical - rear lights, speedo light..front lights

I'm having the same problem. Noticed when I put my bike back together this spring the wire harness was laying on the radiator. Any even when I pull the harness the lights go on and off, So I new I have a burnt wire and need to run a new one.

Well I was riding today and suddenly my bike wants to shut off the power keeps cutting in and out when its vibrating from the speed. When I stop no problem. I'm going to have to take the harness off and figure out what wires are shorted.

IS there a wire diagram out there? Also does the power for the bike go thru this harness as well?

You should replace both and I'm not sure what screws you're talking about because it should just lift up off that mount. You shouldn't have to take those off. goodluck man.

RedBullRR I would think those wires would create that problem but if they're shorting out then it could cause all kinds of problems, so it could be it or not.
