So to continue my previous thread (http://www.gixxer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=110146) where goes the DIY R1 installation:

First I loosen up the cables using the two lock nuts:

Then you need to unbolt 3 screws:

I recommend you do it in order posted in the pic. After you onbolt the 3 screws you're able to open the kill switch housing:

Now you can see the ending of both cables. Then remove the bar end:

Now you can completely remove the GSX throttle:

After that install the R1 throtlle and reverse the steps you did:

I went for a drive after it and the throttle response was better, but I felt like I still need to go the 1/4 to get full throttle...

Today during the afternoon I trying to install the original grip...

Stage 2 - Grip Exchange

I didn't like having two diferrent grips on the bike, so I took off both grips from the throttle bodies in order to exchange them:

In the picture above you can see the R1 throttle body without the grip.

Both grips side-by-side (R1 left,GSXR right)

The bike in the end with the R1 throttle body using the GSXR original grip (I pulled the grip slightly right to cover the tube - not show in pic)...

What is the point in the R1 throttle?

That is a great DIY installation. Would of helped me out a lot. What I can't figure out is why there is so much of a gap between the bar end and grip. When I installed mine, hardly any gap at all. Part # that I ordered from BikeBandit.com was:

Point of the R1 throttle is that when you twist the original throttle, you have to creep your hand up to get the rest to get WOT. With the R1 throttle, you can get WOT without the hand creep. IMO, it is great for drag racing, wheelies and faster exceleration because you are not having to readjust your hand to get the last little bit of throttle to be at WOT. For a 17.00 dollars, its a great addition to the bike. Hope this make sence.

The space might be because I didn't ditch the plastic ring it had inside,I used it...

I ordered directly from Yamaha with the following part number:

47X-26240-00....can anyone confirme if its right?? (I thinkin' they might gave me the 2000 throttle).

I had to ditch the plastic ring. If not, my throttle would stick open and not spring back. And NO it would not work as a cruise. To much of a safety hazard. I know that you part number is a little different than mine.

dsmithgsxr do you still go the 90 degrees or do you only need to go 60 degrees on the throttle turn?

Just went and looked. I would say 60 degrees because it dind't hit 90.

I dont have that gap in mine at all. my part number is for the 2004 R1 as well. ordered from www.missionmotorsports.com. it was only 13 bucks and they didnt charge me shipping

Are the throttle boddies the same diameter? No problems with putting the stock gsxr grip over the R1 body??

The throttle tube is the same diameter, so your stock grip would work, but now is a great time to get some nice gel grips to absorb some of that vibration. Stock grips are glued on so I had to cut mine off to put on my gel grips.

Just about anywhere. Ebay, Cycle Gear, any site sponsor, etc.. Just find something you like. 10-20 bucks for a good gel grip and whatever they hit you for shipping. I don't think any one place can outsell grips. They aren't that expensive anyway.

I used dishing soup to remove the grips, and then used hair spray to install the grip...10 min job...

I was looking at the charts in www.missionmotorsports.com and noticed the grip assy is the same from '00 till '04...So I must have the right one.

Non the less,Monday I'll call Yamaha just to check.

yeah 0-2004 are the same tube.

I tried hairspray to "glue" the grip back on but it still slides on the bar. The one on the tube is not an issue but my left hand moves on the bar. Any thoughts on what else to try? Liquid nails? crazy glue?

BTW I did this on my 1K and it's awsome.
