New to the street!

Hey everyone, so I'm looking yo buy my first street bike, a 2006 gsxr 600, and I just have a couple questions, I have been riding dirt bikes for about 6 almost 7 years, trail and track, so I have a good amount of experience. I am 17 years old, 6ft and 150lbs. I am very mature for my age so I wouldnt be speeding around trying to show off for all the girls, but I'm just wondering if this bike would be okay for me. Of course for the first few weeks I wouldnt go into highly populated areas or anything. Kinda just cruise around some back roads. I don't really want a 250 just because I'm used to power so I don't want to spend money on something I'll be bored with in a week. I look forward to hearing your input. Thank you!

Re: New to the street!

Get a 500gs, for lower insurance rates and a faster learning curve. Then in a year or two(10k miles or more) buy that 600. If you just "HAVE" to have a sport bike, get a ninja 650. I only recently made the transition from a 750 sports tourer to a 07 GSX-r600, and I promise you, I am glad I did not start on this bike. I shudder to think how inadequate I would be on this bike had I started on this bike.

Also, riding dirt bikes means nothing when transitioning to a race bike on the street.

You're used to the power of a dirt bike? I have a CRF450R and I can assure you it doesn't prepare you. A supersport bike is not a good starter bike. The aggressive ergos will slow your learning curve. It's funny watching a newbie on a sportbike trying to make a tight turn in a parking lot. They say they're mature enough to not ride too fast, but that's the purpose of one of these bikes. So then you have newbs dying left and right because of target fixation going into a curve too hot after they swore they rode dirt bikes all their lives. Pulling out into a road with cold tires and going down after blipping the throttle. The list goes on. Even a 650R is a bad recommendation, they have more low end torque than a 600cc I4. But I guess when a man has his mind set on a sportbike you ain't talking him out of it so make sure you have good life insurance and that Obamacare crap.
