Ok for a bit when I go to start my bike it would spin a little get like the starter would kick out stop spining the motor and just spin and then for the next 500 times start perfect it kept doing it more often mainly after it has set for a few hours seems like after it was started you could start it a million times in a row and it would start perfect well a few days ago it was parked and set a few day since it was a big temp drop here and now it engages the motor for about a half a second then just spins the battery is about 3 months old and i fully charged it last night im checking into the warranty as we speak but it was the best battery they carry so i don't think its that but maybe it is the its just not making the amps needed. Im good with cars but I have never really done much on bikes so im hoping you guys can help me out! I don't know where to go or what to check really.
Ok, when I first go to start my bike, it would spin a little kind of like the starter would kick out and stop spinning the motor. Then for the next 500 times start perfect.
It started doing it more often, mainly after it has sat for a few hours and it would seem like after it was started, you could then start it a million times in a row and it would start perfect.
Well a few days ago, it was parked and had sat a few day since there was a big temp drop here, now when I try to start it, it engages the motor for about a half a second then just spins freely.
The battery is about 3 months old and I fully charged it last night, I'm checking into the warranty as we speak but it was the best battery they carry, so I don't think its that but maybe it is and it's just Gone bad.
I'm good with cars but I have never really done much on bikes, so I'm hoping you guys can help me out, as I don't really know where to start.
Have the battery checked, it also helps if you tell us what bike we are dealing with pal.
can anyone one tell me how the starter works on these things? does the starter only spin and not kick out? also the starter clutch is that just like a gear or what?
Update. Well i took everything apart and all the gears and starter clutch looks great everything's smooth and clean when i put put everything back together it spun the first 2 times starting it then took it apart and put it back and then it started quick and on the first time and it started several times fine like it was doing some time back starts fine then just spins so im really lost. could it still being the clutch with it being so clean and smooth? maybe the starter thats not spinning fast enough to make the clutch work? but theres something else. idk how the starter works on this thing but theres only 2 ways I can see how it works 1 the starter spins the start clutch and the pieces inside slide out from the force to lock the gear then it turns the motor but there is a magnet looking thing that has wires that run up somewhere the magnet thing is right below the clutch so maybe it magnetizes the metal pieces in the clutch and pulls them out to lock it but what is that wire magnet thing and wondering if thats the problem? i just don't see how it canbe the starter if it starts strong and fine 9 out of 10 times or how it couldbe the clutch when it looks almost new

This is possible ??
But first.. what weight of oil are ya using?? If its a too heavy this will affect the clutch.
Yer problem sounds like there is a broken spring in the sprag clutch that is not allowing all the rollers to have proper contact with the gear. from the parts diagram it looks like its an assembled unit as there no internal parts available.
Update. It turned out to be the starter clutch like thought. now let me give some info and maybe it will help others who comes to this problem. it took months to finally give and only after it set for a few hours. it has locked up and the starter wouldn't even spin it would not work then be perfect the next million times and then just spin. and when i took it apart it all looked perfect so don't even bother thinking you can tell by looks. and days after not engaging after i put it back together it worked fine for a few days. also when i spun the starter clutch it spun one way and not the other which is what its suppose todo when working proper so don't expect that test to show you if its bad or not.pretty much if you start it and it just spins its gonna be your clutch. it is very easy to change you take the covers off it will be on tight if it has not be taking off in awhile cause of the gaskets so just pry around the edges if its your first time take pics of it all specialty where all the washers go and if you cant remember alot of times look at the part stores online and places will have pics of every washer and part in a exploded view. if you put a washer in the wrong place your starter wont turn or it will hardly go so make sure there in the right place and it takes atleast a week to order a gasket set atleast for mine so go ahead and do it ahead of time. when you pull the cover off not much oil will come out but get some paper towels to put everything on and to get the clutch off i just put a socket on it then hit it with a rubber mallet to break it loose. I got my clutch off ebay for 12 bucks new it was like 250. now what is very important mine was a 02 1000. ya you cant find hardly any clutches for that when I was looking after digging and confirming with the dealership 01 and 02 1000s are compatible 03 and i believe 04 600 and 750s will work mine was off a 03 750. so make sure your batter is fully charged and good and after that if the start just spins or keeps ungaging from turning the motor over then check your clutch. Thanks for all who helped !
