leak down, does that mean put a lil oil in cylinder and read compression and if i get movement that tells me the rings need some attention because the oil sealed enough to hold compression
i m not sure how to check valve lash.

after putting oil in the compression gauge jumps then falls back down to 0 with each turn

Again, buy or borrow a leak down test device. It allows you to set a constant air pressure to your cylinder. Connect to air source and to spark plug hole. Set that cylinder to TDC, and lock crank from turning. Take off carbs and pipe. Put in 100 psi, Listen for signs of air escaping in intake or exhaust.
