HELP! Wiring from R/R smoking! : Suzuki GSX-R Motorcycle Forums: Gixxer.com

Rode to work today, bike felt fine and everything went normal. When I pulled into my parking space I smelled a strong odor of solder, looked back and there was a shit ton of smoke coming from inside the trunk where the R/R is located. One of the wires between the subframe and the R/R was down to bare metal and was glowing orange. I slowly poured about a gallon of water on it because I didn't know what else to do... luckily that seems to have stopped the smoking... WTF?

Does anyone have any ideas? I have an 05 750

Edit:
Pulled the tail off. The R/R burned up I guess, the part in between the subframe and the R/R itself where there is glue or RTV or whatever that staking/filling material is all jacked up...

pps - for anyone's future reference that would be called potting compound

damn near turned the gixxer into a bikebeque too... do most people usually relocate the r/r for the k4/k5 600/750?

I have a manual switch for the fan, and the last mile to my office is from about sea level to 600 ft so it's a pretty significant climb. I turned the fan on because the bike always gets hot going up the grade. Could this have anything to do with the r/r burning up? Just curious

the fan thats attached to the radiator only cools the coolant. and really mostly at slower speeds when airflow isnt moving too much.
The r/r is aircooled. The placement in the trunk should be fine but I am not sure on this since I don't know exactly your bike.

right,

i know the radiator fan cools the coolant. I was wondering if maybe the extra current draw had something to do with it burning up? I'm assuming the fan uses a lot of power but I'm not an expert. I know that pretty much everyone relocates the k6 r/r but I haven't heard too much about my bike

little update, when i pulled the battery out yesterday it measured 1.7 vdc across the terminals. after being on the tender jr all night it made it to 5 before i went to sleep and now it's up to 8.7... lets see if it makes it all the way to 13.8. what are the chances that the battery will still perform as it should after being so severely discharged?

None, but that's not to say that it won't work enough. Once you have totally killed the battery it will not hold a charge as long or provide as many CCA.

New RR is on, voltage across battery is reading approx 14.35 at idle and 5k RPM... acceptable? Also, will this work is it going to melt the cable tie?
