I'm 54 (still act 25) and have been riding since I was 8.
I have had just about every kind of bike there is and
have broken just about every bone....so I'm not new to this
by any means. I'm taking the chance of getting a bunch of smart
remarks by asking this ....but, here goes.
I had a guy offer me a sharp 03 GSXR-600 today and
while test riding it I noticed it "skipping".......
ONLY ..... in 2nd gear. OK....first thing I thought was that
I didn't get on it good enough in 1st to make the chain slip
on the sprocket(s). So...I tried it again.....and again.
It WOULD NOT slip in 1st gear. I figured somebody had
speed shifted or abused 2nd gear over the years and
that that was the problem. I contacted a friend of mine that was
the service manager of Bush Motorsports in Cookeville Tennessee
for several years and he said that he had seen SEVERAL cases
where people had torn into their engines and
not found anything wrong and it turned out to just be the front
sprocket slipping. WHY IN THE WORLD wouldn't it slip in FIRST ALSO??
Has ANYBODY out there run into this problem and it just be something
as simple as the sprocket....and if so.....explain it to me WHY it won't do it in first gear as well.

Might want to take some time and familiarize yourself with the site and where to post. Your first post regarding a 750 was posted in the 1000 forum and this one in anything goes?
You can take off the front sprocket cover and check the teeth of the front sprocket to see if any are missing. If that's not the problem then it's a problem internally.
You can check the front sprocket, but is gonna help you nada... Not the problem.
Reason for slipping is the dogs on second gear are worn. You will need to take the engine out, split the bottom end and have the gearbox undercut. While the bottom end is split, check the selector forks and selector drum...
What Slaki said. Sounds like the infamous 2nd gear problem.
It's not that bad. Strip it yourself, then take the engine itself into a shop or even do that yourself. Me I took the engine in. Only took then 3 hours to strip out, repair and rebuild. Then the gaskets, potential oil leaks are their responsibility.

hopefully you are somewhat an experienced mechanic, if so, you can have the engine dropped in about an hour. Flip it over, remove lower case and the tranny will be staring you in the face.
I bought my k1 cheap because of this. The k1 had this stick in gear problem due to the pin that works with the shift star for the clutch plates. I think in 01 they used a different style star that often jammed and bent the pin which could lock it into 2nd. Anyways, I replaced the pin, a $6 part and while I was in there, I upgraded to a Motion Pro race shift star. Got the bike working beautifully. Shifted well, installed a quick shifter later, now its awesome.

I am from Cookeville, TN as well. If it is the front sprocket first gear would also slip..same goes for the clutch.. Sounds like 2nd gear in the trans is shot. Probably a bent shift fork as well. If you want, send me a pm and I can check it out for you some time. Or if you are close to Sparta..you can just take it into Central Motorsports. My friend owns the shop, works almost specifically on sportbikes ,and is by far the cheapest around.
