hello,
i am a norwegian guy who plans to buy a K4, only ridden 3000km (1800 miles) and in "new" shape with extra parts+++ (170 bhp measured on rearweel). However, i`ve the last year deramt about K5 but its a bit too expensive compared to the K4. So i wonder, is there a big difference between those two bikes? Are there any "weakness" with the K4??
Please forgive my english/american since im from "the cold north". Hope to hear from some of you guys, i would be greatful...
I have ridden both, the most noticeable difference is the K5 changes direction quicker and in the slow speed twisties the K5 is just faster (in both smoother power delivery and less weight makes it easier to push harder). On the freeway and super fast corners they are much of the same .... a good rider will still be faster on any bike.
Unless you are a pfofessional rider, I doubt that you would be able to tell the difference in the two bikes. I own a K4 and it has 165 HP, This thing is a monster. If yours is putting down 170 HP, then the person who has it has invested some money into the motor and if it only has 1800 miles on it, you should see 3-5 more HP after about 4000 miles (total) when the engine finishs breaking in. Unless you just want the "latest and greatest" i'd go with the K4, its a beautiful bike, handles great and runs great.....
I have a K3 samething as K4 and I've rode my buddy's K5 and he's been on mine to. We both agree that my K3 has more power than his K5. On take off mine feels alot fast and more powerfull than his. But if your talking about handling, the K5 handles like a dream and my K3 can't compare. But maybe it's because his only had about 1,200 mile on it! And hasn't really broken in yet! Mine had about 3,000 miles. That's my 2 cents!
i've owned both, and my k4 had more work done to it, so it was faster, but when it comes to putting the power to the ground, the k5 is SOOOO much better... the brakes on the 04 sucked also, whereas the k5 brakes are totally trackable for a beginner. I LOVED my 04, LOVED it, but the 05 is better in every sense. That being said, if you can get a deal on that 'worked on' k4, do it, its a beast of a bike also~

If the K5 brakes are better why'd you change them ?
You will be happy with either bike you pick. The K5 is slimmer and feels less bulky than the K4, but both put out good usable power in the mid-range where you need it most. Yes, the K5 is more refined than the K4, but both are great bikes. If you are going to do track days, then I would lean more in getting the K5. I have a K4 and I love mine. Had a K6 for a short time, loved that bike too.
You will have a great bike with whatever choice you make.
