Any of you smart people know what a KSB valve on a diesel does/stands for? I cant find a definition in the manual and internet results are sketchy(read:I suck at it) Is it really the cold start accelerator

Its some German word that loosely means Cold Start Advance. It increases the timing a few degrees by putting extra pressure on the advance piston. The later 1st gen trucks use a solenoid that actives by a manifold sensor. When the manifold < 90F it activates. Where users have advanced their timing to get better performance, etc. the KSB doesn't have as much effect. On a stock truck the difference in the engine is very noticable.

The KSB restricts the pump return, which raises the case pressure at low RPM. There is a limiting valve to prevent case pressure from getting too high. With the KSB off, case pressure is low at idle and rises with RPM. When the case pressure goes up, the timing is advanced. The KSB uses the same mechanism to advance the timing, it just makes it work at idle instead of being RPM dependent.

KSB is short for KaltStartBeschleiniger

In English that's "Cold Starting Aid" or words to that effect.

The textbook answer is this: KSB is a kalt-start-beschleuniger. German for cold start accelerator. It takes a signal from a temperature sensor in the manifold to actuate a solenoid (may be an electric solenoid post-'92 or a thermal wax pre-92) which redirects fuelpressure into the injector pump. This increase in internal pressure in turn bumps your timing (5degrees?) to smooth out the chilly beast on those cold mornings. The temp sensor will cut power when manifold temp reaches 90 degrees F.

The KSB is located towards the bottom of the injector pump. 2" long x 3/4" cylinder, electrical terminal on one end, a fuel outlet in the middle.

Indeed.

Mornin' boredz.

Buddy called me up at 6:30 to see if I wanted to go to the Memphis Grizzlies game last night ( started at 7 ). So we went. Missed most of the first quarter but it was good game. Our starting point guard was out with the flu ( their best player ), so they were losing most of the game. They came back and won in the last few minutes. Crowd was on their feet... pretty cool. Nice to see they don't suck this year.

Re: Boredz V49 - Canucks optional :P

found more problems with the car. It is leaking oil. It leaves a small puddle wherever i park. I looked under it and the slave cylinder and trans are soaked. I looked into it and it wasn't trans fluid. I the checked the fluid level in the clutch hydraulics and it was fine. My oil filter is also wet and the back of my motor is soaked. It is wet on the rear of the block on the drivers side. A few inches below the last spark plug and straight down.

What would leak from there? All i'm thinking is rear main seal?

That and my trans has been grinding going into second. ONly into second though. It does a low grind and still goes into gear. Once in gear i can accelerate and it drives as normal. If i really take my time and press the clutch all of hte way in and let the rpm drop to idle while driving i can shit it into second without an issue. Synchros? I'm trying to figure out if its worth it to fix it or should i cut my losses and try to sell or part it. I like the car but i don't want to dump tons of cash into it. I can deal with it not having paint and needing minor work but i'd like it running good.

Synchros, without a doubt.
Been there and done that, will only get worse over time.

Don't even bother dicking with that one. Either drive it and deal with it or replace with junkyard find.

I've been avoiding second. Its a manual so i'm shifting from first to third. Would it need a complete rebuild or would i be able to get by with just having the synchros replaced? It still goes into second fairly easy but I have been avoiding it because of fear of it getting worst.

You CAN just replace the synchros, it really depends on what all you find when you open the damn thing up.

FWIW, I had the exact same problem, was even the same damn gear, too.
I never even bothered getting it fixed. Drove around for years just bypassing 2nd gear. After a few years, 3rd went out, too.

Re: Boredz V49 - Canucks optional :P

Thanks man. I'm first going to try and tackle this damn oil leak. I hate that it leaks. If the fix for this isn't too expensive i'll have the trans looked at its a t56 out of a 93 camaro.

Re: Boredz V49 - Canucks optional :P

Did you do a clutch recently? Was the rear main seal leaking then? I would think it would make the clutch start to slip over time. I bet it's intake gaskets or head gaskets or could even be an oil pressure sensor depending on where that is located. I bet it is hard to see the back of the engine, can you get a flashlight and mirror back there?
