By continuing to let it happen, suspecting what your buddy would do, you escalated the situation, and a real person (the girl) was quickly becoming a more possible victim to assault thanks to what you all thought would be funny.
Just my opinion, but the "right" thing to do would be pull the buddy away immediately, tell him, and walk away if he was no longer interested.
All she wants is to feel normal.

We were embarrassing him, as in my friend, that was it. No fight broke out, nothing harmful was said, he was upset and got sick.
