The stock suspension on these bikes are not bad for most routine applications.
I would first check to see where the compression and rebound settings are.
Stock compression setting (at the bottom of the fork) is 1 3/4 turns out from full in.
Stock rebound setting (the slotted screw on the top of each fork) is 1 1/2 out from full in.
(The rear shock is 1 1/2 out rebound, bottom screw and 3 out high speed, top nut and 1 3/4 out low speed, top screw)
These settings are in your owner's manual.
Write down where they were set and where you set them for future reference.
You should get reasonable damping at these settings. More then likely you will have to go in another 1/2 to 1 turn on each if you are pushing the bike harder.
If you are still not getting good damping the chances are the fork fluid is broken down or some has leaked out. Actually, with those miles and years it is time for a fork re-seal anyway if it has not been done recently.
