New Bike Maintenance Question

Havenít really posted much on the forms, but have been lurking around. I had a question for you all and need some advice. I purchased a new 2012 GSXR 600 this past July. The current mileage on the bike is around 300 miles. I plan to service my bike myself as I do with my current vehicles. But I plan on letting Suzuki do the first oil change/check.

The manual stated first oil change should be at 600 miles or within 2 months which ever comes first. I called a few dealerships; one said to put 600+ miles before bring it in. Another one said to go ahead and store it with the old oil in there and bring it to them next spring when I have the 600 miles. Last one I called said to bring it in sometime this month.

What do you guys recommend I do? Go ahead and take it to the dealership for the oil change/check. Or wait until next spring when the motor is broken in and then take it. If I do wait until spring do I go ahead and change the oil? Or leave the old oil in there? Also, when I store it what else should I check?

Re: New Bike Maintenance Question

You have only put 300 miles on it since you've had it? Get out and ride. I would get out and ride her until you reach the suggested mileage then bring it in.

Re: New Bike Maintenance Question

I would do it myself before storing it for winter. If it gets really cold where you are, drain the old oil, fill with new oil to the brim. This will keep condensation out. In the spring drain down to proper amount, ride it another 300 miles and change it again. Then you can change it at regular intervals. Also when storing, fill the gas tank and ad sta-bil fuel additive.

Re: New Bike Maintenance Question

Change the oil&filter now,add sta-bil to the fuel and put it away for winter.
Every new bike I've owned I ride it for 100mi or so,change the oil/filter then do it again at 400mi&then again at 600mi. This is purely my own personal ritual, but you'd be surprised what you see in a brand new engines oil at 100mi.....I change it several times before I reach 600mi.

Re: New Bike Maintenance Question

Best advice..... don't listen to any dealership!

Change it to fresh oil and filter, put a battery tender on it, then let it sit for the winter.

Where in the midwest are you?

Re: New Bike Maintenance Question

I got mine in September and it has 3700 on it now. Probably be to 5 in a week. And that was with a month in the shop after I lowsided it. You should change the oil and filter at 20, 1-200 just oil, and then get the 600 mile checkup. Also you should not follow suzukis break in. You want complete heat cycles on the motor (read full operating temp and full cool) with the motor spinning at its maximum torque range accel and decel.

Re: New Bike Maintenance Question

You already have the answer to your question so i'm not going to chim in on that. But seriously 300miles? I lived in MN and rode when it was in the 30's. I have 28000 miles on my 06 from new and that was all MN til last year. You need to ride that thing. nothing more sad than a 5 year old bike with 3000 miles on it, unless your the guy buying it.

Re: New Bike Maintenance Question

Man 300 miles really??? lol I took my bike out of the crate and 5 days later did the 600 mile oil change. Now at 2 years 7 months she is right at 30,000, wish mine was that new again As others have said change the oil now if you are done riding for the year.

I'm with the other old guy on this. I like to do a few early changes also. For sure I would change it before you lay it up. Make sure you run the Stabil through the bike for at least several minutes after you add it.

Re: New Bike Maintenance Question

600-1000 miles is the target. Doesn't mean you gotta park it and then haul it home at 599 miles.
You do need to get that initial oil and filter changed Before you store it,as it's got the small shavings and stuff in there. Stabilizer in the fuel, tender on the battery, lube on the chain, air up the tires and wait 'til your warm weather.

.

You will get Amsoil, Royal Purple, and Rotella, Bel-Ray, etc. in responses as well.

Can you or your bike justify the additional $1-12 per quart over conventional oil?
