opinions on what i should do

i was doing some valve adjustment on my motor i got from a fella a while back. going to be installing it into my 85. I realized today Its missing a cam cap, pretty mucha death sentance to a head. I have another motor here with a head on it that has battered and broken fins and looks like shit. Although all the caps are there. I know its advised not to swap caps but has anyone actually done it? What was the outcome? Does anyone know the clearances for the cam bearings? Really bummed about this

Was this the first time you had the valve cover off?

Regardless, you could try swapping a cap. Install the cap and torque it down to spec using plastic-guage to mic the clearance. If it's within spec remove the material, lube it up and spin it without the cam chain. It should spin freely and not bind.

that sounds like a plan to me, this is the first time i had the valve cover off. i had this motor sitting in the corner for a while and someone has been into it before but the rest of the motor looks ok and has good comp

I have swapped caps before without trouble. But maybe I just have been lucky. Using the plastigauge is a good recommendation.
