Homemade Radar Screamer
I know I haven't been a member long, and surely don't participate as much as I should, but this is something I feel I can contribute to those who are interested. Although not popular, a lot of us ride with a radar detector. Personally I use the Escort 9500IX Blue. I have it hardwired to my 2008 GSXR-600. While the visual display at night was helpful, the audio output was terrible. Their are a few products mass produced to assist with this most of which are $100+. I did some homework, and for 26 bucks at Radioshack, was able to make my own audio amplifier. I am a little futuristic with this post as I don't have time to complete it now but give me a day or 2 to get the pictures ready I will repost with a full write up. For now I will list the parts needed.
1 5VDC Relay $4.69
1 SPST Rocker Switch $3.19
1 PerfBoard (I bought the smallest size Radioshack had and its enough to build 5 of these things $3.19
1 12 ft. speaker cable. (one end has spades, the other is a 5 volt head phone jack. Part #42-2454 $3.79
1 small project box 4x2x1 $3.49
1 12 volt mini piezo siren $5.79
These are all the supplies you need. I am lucky that my local Radioshack has a resident Nerd who works there who helped me pick the right components. If you aren't so lucky, please PM me and I would be more than happy to assist you in gathering your components. You will also need a soldering gun and of course solder. Some sealant or epoxy to seal any openings in the project box and around any connections to ensure a water tight fit. As it stands now I have built and installed mine and it took about 2 1/2 hours to complete. Knowing what I know now about the correct wiring, and how it all goes together I am going to be rebuilding it for a cleaner more stealth look. If you are mechanically inclined, and if my write up tomorrow isn't absolutely terrible, I wouldn't see this taking any more than an hour from start to finish. Like I said, I am going to do my best to complete the write up by tomorrow afternoon, Sunday morning the latest. Hope you all enjoy.
