Whistler Cruisader radar/laser detector installed on 07 GSX-R 600

Hello everyone, so this is my first post so please take it easy and let me know of any corrections I need. Anyways I searched and searched and couldn't find a decent write up on any type of radar installation. So here is mine..... Please note the pictures are from my phone so they are not the best quality. Also I didn't really plan on doing a write up until after... so its not exactly step by step, more of before, middle and after. I chose the Cruisader because I liked how small it was and that you could customize where you put it. Whereas with some of the other radar detectors you are stuck with this big bracket in the middle of your gauges. Also I really liked the external LED light that comes with it and the WIHD light(Wireless In Helmet Display). That way you don't have to keep looking down at the radar.

THIS IS A VERY TIME CONSUMING INSTALLATION!!!!!

Now that I have done it I'm sure I could do it much faster. I also was able to do this entire thing without drilling any holes. That way I can take it all off if I want/need and nobody will ever know.

I bought the Whistler Cruisader from BuyRadarDetectors.com because they were offering a free wireless in helmet display. The total was $137 shipped.

BEFORE INSTALLING PLUG IT ALL TOGETHER AND HOOK UP TO BATTERY TO MAKE SURE IT ALL WORKS.

This is very important, so after spend 3 hours installing and you go to turn it on and it doesn't work..... Well I saved you alot of time. It's also very important to note that the connections must be EXTREMELY snug. Seriously push them together as tight as you possibly can. I spent a couple hours tearing everything back off after hooking my all up and then turning it on and getting a COM ERROR. I called customer support and they said it was probably a defective radar.... Well luckily my buddy had one and after a little switching around I narrowed it down to the connection between the display unit and the radar detector itself. After pulling it apart and really pushing them together it fixed the problem. After that I was pretty excited that it went to the main screen and I thought everything was good.....until I started driving. Whenever I got above 4k RPMs I got a LASER* message. Again I pulled everything apart and checked the connections for the laser. After a little research I found that the * means it is the rear laser detector. I played around with that and after I unplugged the laser the message went away. So I am almost positive it was getting interference from some high voltage device, starter, alternator. I installed a 470mfd filter capacitor as the installation manual recommends (found one at radio shack for $1.50) and that didn't solve the problem. I called customer service and again said just send everything in. (the customer service doesn't have alot of knowledge or faith in their product) Eventually I talked to a technician and he said to send it into "Mike" and he would install some shielding to the laser/cable to help prevent any type of noise interference. They did all that for free I just had to pay the $2 for shipping which I was fine with. So anyways everything has been running great now (without the rear laser installed). It has been about 2 weeks and haven't had any problems and has already saved me. Once I receive the laser and get it installed I will post those pictures up to. They said it would be 2-3 weeks.

The pictures

I bent the bracket a little to help put it at the right angle.

This is the temperature gauge and I just ran a zip tie up through an existing hole and than just put a little hot glue around it so it didn't move around

This is the filter capacitor it is polar sensitve and will blow up (more like pop) if put in backwards. The arrows point toward the NEGATIVE side or if yours has a long and short lead the smaller one should be negative.

This is how my radar is powered. It is on keyed power and it is tied into my brake lights. (should be the brown wire) I used this type of connection so if down the road I want to remove it, it is very easily taken off, put a little shrink tube on and its good as new.

If you have any questions please let me know I would be glad to help anyone so they don't have to go through all the pain staking things I did.....

Wow, thanks! I'll be sure to pass this on to a member who will find this useful as he was just asking about radar detectors.

Your welcome, I'm not sure I understand what you mean by set up? If you read above it shows I used the Whistler Cruisader with pictures of the different components...... ha so maybe I misunderstood that but no they are not jammers just detectors but yes you can buy jammers if you want... if you go to the website (buyradardetectors.com) you can get a better idea for what I used. As for how far away I can pick up a cop depends on how high they have their radar on. (I believe they can adjust how far away they want to "shoot" the beam, I could be wrong) but usually on the highway cops leave them on high and it will pick them up way before I can even see them. But lets say driving around campus the cop leaves his on very low and doesn't pick it up until you are pretty close.

Thread Revival
Long-term how did it hold up? Does the decent range still seem to hold true, the unit still functioning ect ect. Looking to buy one, butso far not really any long term reviews on it.

Thanks

Hey sorry I am just now responding but I ended up selling the bike after about 8 months and never once did I have a problem with it. The installation was a pain but I recently just installed another one on my new bike and it went much much faster less than an hour for the full install. Overall I couldn't find anything else that could replace this. The in helmet display led thing runs out of battery's pretty fast but other than that everything is pretty legit. I mean I ended up buying another one.

nowadays leos weapon of choice is lidar. if/when you are zapped and that detector gives out its warning its a wrap.. your speed has been recorded. unless you have a jammer and really know how to use it radar detectors are a waste of money. even if you do have a jammer and know how to use it.. if the leo is well experienced with lidar they will know you used a jammer and you will really be in trouble.

I would highly disagree with that statement. First maybe in bigger cities every single cop uses Lidar but I would highly doubt it, and your statement about that radar detectors are a waste of money makes me assume you either are a cop or just dumb. How can I prove that they are not? As I am riding my bike and any of my vehicles as I pass a cop or see a cop my radar detector goes off most of the time. So that means that... wow they are using radar and for only $100 for this radar detector that is cheaper then any ticket. So I really don't know how that would be considered a waste of money, if it saves me from ONE ticket it has paid for itself. But thank you for your input.

Yes, GIX750 is correct. You detect a LIDAR and you are already gone. Anyone buying a LIDAR detector to avoid being speed detected by a LIDAR has been royaly ripped off.

And "sorry, didn't know" doesn't wash in most jurisdictions. Most jurisdictions make that law an offence where the element of mens rea is not a required proof of the actus reus.

Or to put it simply, it doesn't matter whether you did not know or did.
