so, Instead of paying the ridiculous price for new/used voltage regulators/rectifiers I would rather just spend a few bucks and build my own circuit, I'm no professional.. but at work I use simple circuits convert 24v AC to 12vDC all the time.. how hard could it be to convert 3 Phase 55v to 12vDC and build a few extra for backup.
Also, if that wont work, someone told me that almost all bike stators are the same voltage, whats stopping me from wiring a $20 unit off a different brand of bike and making it work with a gsxr?

I don't know about the first part for sure, but the manual has a simple diagram.
For the second part, NOTHING! I've heard that the newer Honda's and Yamaha's use a unit that is a mosfet device and they are supposed to run cooler and last forever. I'll see if I can find a writeup about it if you're interested.
Finally, I got a hold of a cheap almost new rectifier from a Honda CBR 600 F3 and wired it in, it works perfectly.. the damn thing gets really hot though, but I was told that's normal. It works great though, my lights/guage cluster no longer flicker and my lights are brighter.
a buddy of mine was parting out his bike and I got it for $35, he purchased it brand new a few months ago for a lot more!
now I just need a new battery to replace the one I destroyed running it dead every day trying to start the bike when it had carb issues.. now that's all fixed..
These rectifiers were also known for premature failure so i believe you have not chosen wisely young weedhopper!
I kept the stock plug on the bike side of the wiring harness for this reason and soldered on the plug from the old rectifier onto the Honda rectifier so when it does die it will be easy to put a stock gsxr rectifier back on the bike. it only took me 20 min to wire this one in, so it's not a big deal.

I just wired one up from a 97 yamaha yzf 600r. Carges much better than my gixser one ever did and it was almost a direct replacement. Just had to cut the clip off the srad rectifier and solder it to the yzf rectifer. The only diff was the yzf was a male plug and the gixxer was a female plug. Other than that they looked the same and you could even plug them into each otherif you wanted to....not that it would make sense to do so. I was merely trying to illustrate how similar they are in desighn

Sorry for digging up such an old post. I have an old 1983 Honda Nighthawk 650 with what I believe is a bad R/R. I ordered another off eBay and believe it has the same problem. They both draw 8 AMPS. So, I'm guessing there is an internal short in the regulator and that must be a common problem.
Now, for the reason I'm posting here... I have an electrical background and believe the circuits for a R/R is VERY simple. So, I'm going to try and build my own. I understand all the items in the charging system except for the none yellow wires going to the stator. In my case, they're two wires; black & white. I've been told this is for the "induction coil". Can someone please explain the purpose of this?
it only took me 20 min to wire this one in, so it's not a big deal.
