Trying to repair a hole from a connecting rod and welding a tab aren't the same. Depending on what you have and what happened, I may be looking for a new one..
cast in itself is hard to weld. its bascially "pot metal" they have a mold poor liquid material into it and let it harden up. it makes a solid uniform product but the problem is that it also has imperfections, dirt, trash, and other impurities that make it hard to weld.
it can be done but its extremely hard with aluminum it has to be clean clean clean and then you have to find a decent enough aluminum welder to do it. aluminum is one of the hardest metals to weld IMO
Yes, you can do it! It will most likely not be a pretty or a very strong weld though. You may have to try different rods to see which will work best on the blend of aluminum.
I have welded a cylinder wall that is off a 2 stroke, completely saturated with oil, ground out a V and then filled it. The weld is holding (not pretty) and leak down test shows no leak, but through a small pin hole I have some oil leaking out when it's running at 13K RPM.
I welded those tabs on my 02 600, they're not that bad. Just do a very good prep job and if the motor in a running bike, remove the battery so u don't fry the electricals.
Find an aluminum welding specialist. The side stand bracket snapped off the frame on my aprilia. Got recommended someone by three different people. He done a perfect job. He used a welders battery isolator so he didn't need to remove battery.
If your in north London check out Laurie at Bunns Lane welding. When you talk to him you realise he weld not for money but because he can.
How much did you get charged DJ.....I had my oem screen brace welded, when I didn't know where to get stuff from and was charged £40!!!
I could've bought a new one at that price!!!
£30. Was done in an hour and he gave me an aluminium grinding disc so I could fit the side stand back perfect. But that wasn't straight forward welding. He is a genius welder.
