: Advice: First bike for wife

Hey ladies,

I figured this would be the best place to start. My wife wants her own bike and I don't know what to get her. I was going to give her my old 98 CBR 600f3, but it's beed modded for track-like performance(102hp@RW Dyno'd). I think it's to much bike for her, plus it weighs 405lbs dry. On top of that I was teaching her how to ride by walk cluthing and she dropped in on herself. :\

She is 5'3 and weighs 120lbs.

I was thinking of getting her a ninja 250 but 1.) she doesn't like the styling and 2.)I don't think she will be please with the performance after being on the back of my 600 and 750. Then only other bike I would really consider getting her is a sv650s. It's the lightest bike I can find(372 lbs. dry) with power she can grow into but not get her into too much trouble. I will probably have to lower it for her.

So, what do you all think and would recommend? She has never driven a bike before.

Feel free to chime in too, guys.

This bike is actually heavier than my cbr600. 412 dry. I almost bought a yzf600 for myself as my frist bike though. :)

Well if she is looking for styling than there is not much to pick from with learner bikes....maybe just look for a used 600 in good condition but for cheap and put some good frame sliders on it and hope for the best! Good Luck

i taught my wife on an 01 R6. she really liked it. don't worry about height. u can always lower it. plus the weight will be alot easier to control because she'll be able to use her whole leg instead of her tip toes. i took my wife to a church to teach her. let her practice taking off and handling it w/o traffic and such. she was ready in 20 minutes for an empty road. lol. good luck.

Why not consider the Suzuki GS500?

(yellow=2004)

It's something like 400 lbs dry, maybe only slightly lighter than your bike. But it has a low seat height, making it easy to steer. It's not a stunner, but ut's pretty sporty looking. I'm always amazed that people without bikes can't tell my GS500 from a GSXR1000 anyways...

You can get a used one for cheap like I did. It was already scratched, so when I dropped it, it didn't break my heart. I've had it for about 8 months, about 5,000 miles--I just put new suspension and handlebars on it. Hubby is going to learn on it next!

On a more serious note, I'm thinking of bikes for my wife too. She has been expressing interest lately on learning how to ride. We only have 1 bike (K6) and she is afraid of dropping a mint condition bike. We were thinking about borrowing a dirt bike and learning the basics off the pavement.

off the pavement is another world. would be easier on road. less dips and stuff.

If she's looking to learn she could start out with a Maxi scooter like the Burgman 400 my wife has.

It ain't that sexy but it's got an autom atic transmission so no foot action at all. It'll still beat most cars and it'll still do 95 MPH top speed. Handles VERY well believe it or not.

It lets a new rider concentrate oin the road and what's gong on without having to figure all of the mechanics of riding as well.

My wife has had hers for 2 years now and is ready to move up to a full fledged bike.

Just bought my wife a 1991 CBR F1. She is 5'2" and she does very well on it. I am however looking to lower it a bit for her.

If you want to buy ONE bike, to have and to hold, till death do you part...
Make it an sv650(s). Excellent starter bike, easy to handle and docile UNTIL you start wringing it out. Thats when things start to happen!
It has enough power to satisfy but not overwhelm the new rider.
Lots of potential for performance upgrades, good looks and inexpensive as sport bikes go. I think its one of the few "everybikes" today that will not be outgrown once you wife becomes proficient with her skills.

I just picked up my first bike and I love it, '01 GSXR 600.

If she can balance, can comfortably touch the ground with both feet, and is willing to take her time getting used to a bike - I don't think it's makes too much difference what you start her on.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I thought this thread died.

I went ahead and got her a Black '06 Ninja 250 on Tuesday. I made the mistake of telling her lowing a bike messes with the handling so she refused to get a bike that we would have to lower. Since she has never driven a bike before, and already dropped my old 600(right after I got it back from the paint shop no-less), I knew I would have to get her something with a low seat hieght.

After an hour of training her she is already going up and down the street going through gears 1-3 and making u-turns w/out puting her foot down. I forsee a gsx-r600 in her future. :)

She'll be full throttleing it everywhere in a month lmao, 650r is also a 2 cylinder and costs like 5k or some crap.

I started on a 250 and rode it for 6 mo. before I got the FZ6 then rode that for a yr. and got the GSXR ;).

Sorry to say, but I think the 250 was a waste of money. I learned on the gs-500. FABULOUS learner bike: it's forgiving, won't jump out from under her, and it's pushable so as I get better it goes too. It's heavier than the r6, but it's not terribly scary heavy. I did drop it in the grass as I was backing it out once. It did scare me, but I picked it up and kept riding. It lasted about a year, but I'm still riding it as I'm saving up for the gsxr-600. But it's whatever works to get her riding with you. Ride safe and have fun :cheers

My wife loves her ninja 250. I told her she will need a middle bike befor jumping to a gsxr-600. SHe doesnt like the idea, but I know how much of a difference going from a 250 to a r600. I will talk her into getting an sv-650 first.

great idea if you have a girl willing to ride a scooter after being on a sport bike, i think thats the best first bike idea though.
