: Getting first bike home?
houseofmoo 03-09-2003, 06:49 PM Hey everyone. I was wondering how you all got your first bikes home? I went down the the Suzuki dealer and they said they will have my bike ready for me on march 21st (an '03 silver SV650S =). I was wondering how you all got your first bikes home? By the 21st I'll be done with my MSF course, so you think I could just ride it home? Or should I see if i can find someone to ride it to my house for me? Thanks.
ta2drvn 03-09-2003, 06:52 PM If you are done with the course I say ride it home be careful. Do you have your license yet? if not they may not let you ride it out of the lot, there liability problems.
Hammer 4 03-09-2003, 06:54 PM Did you ask if they could deliver it to your house..?
knee_dragger 03-09-2003, 07:22 PM I road it home. If truth be told I actually stalled it at a light (not used to the clutch yet) just like a dumbass http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/bitchslap.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Congratz.....don't feel bad...everyone stalled their bike at 1 time, or another....... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
GSXR_Wizard 03-09-2003, 07:26 PM I would ride it home...as long as you have your license and the bike is insured and registered, I think you're good to go. Heck, you have to start to learn to ride it sometime, right? However, it wouldn't hurt if you had a friend follow you (either on a bike or a car/truck) just to make sure you're okay. I would have them behind you in case you stall it or what not, they can be your "blocker" so no moron runs into the back of you while you're restarting the bike at a light or whatever. Plus, I would just try to take sidestreets (if possible) or non-busy streets home.
Just a few safety things to think about. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif However, there is no time like the present to start riding your new bike! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/bounce.gif
MrJones944 03-09-2003, 07:28 PM Rode mine home just last week in 20 degree michigan weather. Holy shit it was cold but well worth it. Why the hell would you have anybody else ride it home for you? Go for it. Full coverage?
FudoPower 03-09-2003, 07:42 PM I rode my home and I wouldn't have had it any other way. I had my father follow behind me all the way home though. Its a good idea to have someone you know with you "just" in case something does happen (knokk on wood).
Goodluck with the new bike http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/banana.gif
jlaubuchon 03-09-2003, 08:47 PM I had to load my bike in my truck and take it home. Damn dirty Malcom Smith's had to order my helmet and it didn't come in till 4 days after I bought my bike. I tell you, if a shop's going to sell street bikes they need to keep street bike parts in stock! Anytime I need anything they have to order it. So now I order through a dealer online since it's going to take forever anyway I may as well get a discount and not pay taxes or shipping while I'm at it. Sorry, had to rant a little. If you have all of the stuff hop on and jam home on it. As long as you have a permit or license you're set.
JediGuitarist 03-09-2003, 09:32 PM I rode my first bike home from the dealer. Approximately 25km. The dealer was located on a highway with an 80km (50mph) speed limit. I was petrified at first. I had just finished my MSF course 5 days earlier. I had one of my buddies ride behind me in his full size van to run interference. It was a real hot day in April so the street was nice and warm. The sales guy told me to take it easy on the tires but since it was hot, I didn't have a prob with slipping around the corners.
I was so careful that I don't think I went over the speed limit. I did stall one time pulling out of the dealer lot. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/lick.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
I think it was a good move to ride it home. Got used to the highway driving really quick. Ask the dealer if they'll deliver the bike. Most of the places around here will do that as a courtesy. Have fun with your SVS http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
yello_ranger 03-10-2003, 10:05 AM I had my brother rode my bike home for me...I did not have a license..MSF course was in 2 weeks. I completed the course on Sunday (3 Days Thur, Sat, Sun). I went into TX DPS that monday and got my licence.
alister 03-10-2003, 10:22 AM I borrowed a trailer from Spooner (woo! props!) and picked it up myself because I wasn't licensed yet at that time.

MentalMisfit 03-10-2003, 04:22 PM I had a friend that had been riding for a few years ride it home for me. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif If You ride it home just look for a parking lot close to the dealership and practice a little if your house is far from the dealership. Thats if you and the bike are all legal to drive http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
02sixxer 03-10-2003, 06:04 PM ride it home make sure you get somone to follow you. if you have freinds who ride grt them to go with you. i bought my bike then rode for about 2 hours with freinds. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

A_Fire_Inside 03-10-2003, 09:12 PM I rode mine home http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif........scared as hell tho... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
dean600 03-10-2003, 09:14 PM I agree, ride it home. I know it was stupid, but the first time I rode a motorcycle was when I drove it off the lot. I had 2 friends with bikes with me, one in front and one behind. I was scared to death, but like others said, no time like the present. You are better off than I was as you have completed a safety course. Good luck.
I had to throw my last bike into the back of my truck to bring it home, its been sitting in the garage since then - almost 6 weeks now. Damn Minnesota winters http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
RichKovacs 03-11-2003, 11:26 PM I had the guy that I bought it from ride it to my house (2000 Katana 600) then the second bike I rode it from the dealer which is about an hour away (2002 Busa).
GSXR_Wizard 03-13-2003, 12:57 AM On my first one, I actually picked it up with my pickup truck. hehehehe...didn't ride it home cuz the guy couldn't start the damn thing, but I bought it anyway. Wanted a bike that badly. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif However, it all worked out once I got it home and found out the moron didn't know to pull in the clutch lever to start it!!!! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif That is SOOOO SCARY to let people like that own motorcycles! It was right in the manual he provided to me, no less!!!!
Needless to say, I got a steal on the bike. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
jeff137 03-18-2003, 04:39 PM If you have taken the course just ride it home. In NC you can take the written test before the riding part and get a restricted motorcycle license. The only restriction on it is you cannot carry a passenger. Once you are comfy with your skills, you can go back to take the driving part. In Virginia where I got my first bike license, if you took the MSF course all you had to do was the riding part of the class. I guess it varies by state. As for getting your bike home it is just up to how comfy you feel... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
