Well, i have just bought a new GSXR 600, and i am a new bike rider. I have ridden dirtbikes in the past and mopeds and what not, i am by no means and expert rider. A lot of my friends have been riding for a few years now, and i finally decided to get a bike. Anyways, they all started out on 600's, most of them had motorcross experience before they bought their bikes. Anyways, they all suggested i start out on a 600, and i bought one.
While searching the internet, i somehow stumbled on this forum and started to read some of the posts. You folks have me terrified now. It's winter here in Buffalo, NY so i can't ride my bike yet. and it's too late to change my mind so i have no choice but to learn to ride on a 600.
So now i just was maybe looking for some advice on a good way's to learn on a sport bike with no sport bike experience, my friends wont push me to go 120 and do wheelies all over the place, they have all cautioned me to go slow and take my time. They all also said that the break in period will be good enough for me to get comfortable on the bike w/out getting too wild.
But, i was hoping some of you more experienced riders could give me some tips on starting out on a sportbike, because there is no such thing as too much advice. Thanks.

Welcome. It sounds like you have some responsible friends so that's a start. I'd say do a couple things for a few months(maybe all summer if you can):
1) Take a safety course(you'll here this from all of us)
2) Stay off the highway(to keep your speed low) - ideally most regular roads are 45mph or
under. The faster you go the quicker you'll get into trouble.
3) Take the first few weeks and DON'T ride on the roads. Take it up and down the
driveway, up and down your street(if not a main road), and around a parking lot. Get
used to the throttle and turning/leaning.
4) Look where you want to turn not at the ground in front of you or the car ahead of you or
coming down the road.
I can't stress #4 enough. It's usually overlooked but if you don't do this correctly you'll end up turning somewhere you don't want to and/or dumping.
Good luck! Once you get used to it you'll love it!

welcome!! Too late to turn back now, many people have started off on a 600 and have had no problems, just read the posts, my only advice is to get a lot of seat time and if you can afford, it look in the paper for a beater bike to learn on you can find them all a round for $1500+- used ex500's sv650's old katana's ect. and get some frame sliders.
Just be very carefull and take the MSF course, if you can get to a track school that would be ideal after you take the MSF course.
Have a lot of respect for that bike and don't be afraid to be the last one through the twisties or to the desination. We had a new guy ride with us a few months ago on a new cbr600 and at the first stopping point we waited and waited and waited but he never showed soem guys went to look and sure enough he hit a turn and didn't know what he was doing and needless to say he was done for the day bike was beat up but still ridable but he was ok just shook up and decided that he would go back home. Havn't seen or heard from him since.
I hope to hear that you get the experiance and learn to love to ride, nothing in the world is better, well almost nothing. Take the course.

Welcome to the board!!!! Enjoy the addiction you are about to start because there is no turning back once you ride that bike for the first time. You'll be hooked! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Just heed everyone's advice/warnings here. They all know what is up. There are some very experienced riders here...as you see, I'm a http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/squid.gif so you can't listen to me...hehehehe..KIDDING. But seriously, just take it easy, break in the bike slowly (even after it's initial break in) and I think you'll be cool.
Enjoyyyyyyyy http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
