Since there is a taper in the fork tubes, it seems like I can only raise them about 3/4 in or so (or around there) safely. How much have you guys raised them? Is it still safe, or is it just better to run a strap? My old 01 forks didn't have this problem.

On my '05 and my '06 I'm set at 1.5"... And it tightened up ok with the smaller taper in the fork leg?

be very careful with the smaller taper on the forks. I lowered my forks on my 03 1000 and the felt good and tight. After riding around for awhile the left clip on slid off the tapered part while I was accelerating hard on my turbo 1000. good thing their was no one in the other lane, because I was in it. The front tire tucked and slid one me. Very lucky I did not crash.
I bought a set of vortex clip ons. My fork tubes are about 3/4" above the tripple clamp and I put a strap on the front at the drag strip. also make very sure to watch your suspension travel when lowering the forks through the clamps. 2" ground clearance and 2 1/2" suspension travel is not good.
I can lower mine real low with the koenig pan and dump pipe out the side from my turbo. I have my lower fairings cut right now. I am going to get a low profile front tire and lower the fender on the tire so I can lower the front even more.

Youll have to cut some tin can or something to put between the clamp and fork. I did it and it holds like the original...

Are you running a 60 series front tire?

Sounds pretty scarey...although I do see a ton of new 1000's with raised fork tubes. Are they just risking it or do they actually shim them so the triple clamps actually clamp to the leg?:confused

It isn't scarey at all... you'll just have to mesure the difference between the upper part and the lower and make the right thickness gasket.
I'm not too good at technical english but hope you'll get the picture... talking about pictures I can make some as picture is worth a thousand words :)
