: VIN location?

Hi everyone,

There's a bike at the apartment complex that looks abandoned. The reason I say it's abondoned is because:
1. My neighbor said that's it's been in the same spot for about 2 years.
2. The tarp that's on it is all torn up.
3. It's been on it's side a few times from the wind an no one uprighted it except for me (:-)

My question is where's the VIN located. The bike is a Katana 600 (sorry if I'm using the wrong forum/site). I'm not sure of the year. Hears a picture of a similar bike, [url=http://www.zion-tech.com/katana1.jpg.]http://www.zion-tech.com/katana1.jpg It's got the same color scheme. I would like to do the legit thing and try to find out where the owner is. It still has the license plate on it (RI registration). I'm in Atlanta, GA. Also, is it possible to have a new key made? That may sound fishy but I'm new to bikes and riding. I plan on taking the MSF next month. I'd prefer to get used to riding on something used before moving up to new. That is if the thing is salvageable.

Any thoughts?

Looks like a 94 - 95
vin location is in 2 places
1 on the right side of the steering head
2 on the back side of the crank case.
i had a 93 600 and if i remeber correctly thats where the #s are, since the bikes are basically unchanged since about 1988-?
my stock katana with a pipe and jet kit would bet any gsxr600 i raced back in the day.
yes its possible to get a key made but you would be better off putting new locks in just incase the owner relizes he dosnt own the bike anymore.

Thanks for the info. I found it.
I have a friend who is a police officer. He looked it up and found no info on it.
It looks like it may be a pain just to find the owner. Besides things might get complicated because the bike is on the premises of the apartment complex where I live.
I'll have to see if they know who owns it and then see if they want to transfer all rights to do research to me.

the number stamped on the back of the engine is not the vehicle identification number, it's a separate engine number which won't be the same.
