: 2006 Brakes??
SONIC7 04-18-2006, 03:13 PM Anybody else feel that the braking feels a little spongy? I hit the brakes hard yesterday for the first time as I was coming up to the stop light and the bike didn't want to stop. Even on the higway it feels too soft, doesn't bite down hard enough. Maybe they need to break in a little? Hows the breaking on yours?
Thing is too, I'm comparing to an R6 with braided lines and EBC HH rated brake pads. And this sucks, cause this is my second bike and have been on the R6 for 3 years and don't remember what stock feels like anymore.
lexpression02 04-18-2006, 03:22 PM the brakes def seem a lot softer then they were on my r6. i only have about 550 miles on my gixxer, but the rear still feel quite soft.
Minor Threat 04-18-2006, 03:27 PM Brakes on 'Zook's suck compared to Yamaha.
Suzuki transmisisions are 'snick', 'snick' perfect.
Yammie make the best brakes.
Get 'em braided, they'll be much better. I find you have to bleed Suzuki brakes often to keep 'em nice and strong.
eli750k6 04-18-2006, 03:37 PM My rear brake started out nice and relatively stiff when brand new. Now it's mushy and kinda uncomfortable feeling. The front brake feels mushy as well.
I say mushy because it feels bad but it still stops pretty well!
Anyone got any links to some nice lines???
:cheers Eli
Plarp 04-18-2006, 03:41 PM The brakes are the same as those employed on the last incarnation of the GSX-R series. In other words, they are universally bemoaned amongst racers, even those that have followed a complete replacement protocol for everything except the calipers themselves. Hence, it is the calipers that are the weakest link.
No problems on my setup though, then again, I was only doing 1:27's at Grattan.
random hero 04-18-2006, 04:32 PM finally a real issue w/these bikes... i was farting around today w/the bike and noticed i could pull the lever back to the grip even on its furthest setting.. going to slap some vesrah pads and galfer sbk lines on, that made a 1000% difference on my 04 race gsxr, we'll see... the back brake also feels wierd, its stiff but doesnt seem to have much bite, guess i'll be doing the back brake as well
lexpression02 04-18-2006, 04:52 PM finally a real issue w/these bikes... i was farting around today w/the bike and noticed i could pull the lever back to the grip even on its furthest setting.. going to slap some vesrah pads and galfer sbk lines on, that made a 1000% difference on my 04 race gsxr, we'll see... the back brake also feels wierd, its stiff but doesnt seem to have much bite, guess i'll be doing the back brake as well
let us know how that goes!
Cestode 04-18-2006, 04:56 PM Welcome to the wonderful world of the GSXR. They have always had shitty brakes compaired to Yamaha & honda.
Use stainless -2 lines and upgrade the pads.. EBC's suck that's all I have to say on that matter...
random hero 04-18-2006, 05:49 PM i used galfer pads and have had good luck w/them, but nothing compares to vesrahs
TheCunningMan 04-18-2006, 06:33 PM Definitely no comparison to the kit on my 2002 750 with braided and galfers. I'm looking for braided lines ASAP what's out there?
random hero 04-18-2006, 07:19 PM dunno for sure.. but i would guess the lines from 04-05 would probably work just fine on these bikes... i think the master cylinder's are the same, i'll call kneedraggers tomorrow and find out
Yeah the old parts fit galfer lines & pads

+1
I raced an R6 recently and was blown away by the brake performance.......It was fun!
Moto_Joe 04-18-2006, 10:04 PM Fuck, the damn thing still stopped 20 feet shorter thatn the 01 1000 in a 65 -0 MPH test...... done by me. I can stop it repeatedly in precisely 101 ft without lifting (but floating) the rear using both brakes.
CAnt make a good comparison to other brands though. Ive riden all of them, but only the suzukis to performance levels.
Cestode 04-18-2006, 10:21 PM Dud wait till you try a yamaha... I test rode an 02 R6 for a buddy of mine and almost dumped it cause the brakes were killer. All stock too. Then I learned about PF95's and Vesrahs on Suzuki's
Silver_Bullet 04-18-2006, 10:32 PM I threw some galfer steel braided brake lines on and replaced the stock pads with EBC HH pads. The brakes are rock solid and the bike stops on a dime. The lines were about 100 for both front lines and the rear line, plus about 50 for the pads. For 150 bucks the upgrade is worth it. By the way, you don't need the rear line, but I got it for barey nothing so I went with it.
constantine 04-18-2006, 10:39 PM Ferodo pads + SS lines + brembo master cyl. = F*** sweet brakes.
Plarp 04-19-2006, 06:45 AM Evidently, they still tend to fade. The calipers being the weakest link.
SONIC7 04-19-2006, 09:43 AM So what's the consensus guys?
Galfer lines + which pads? Don't know much about vesrah's, are they considered to be one of the better brake pad brands?
SONIC7 04-19-2006, 09:55 AM OH YES....another thing I found and forgot to mention. It looks like the front brakes are connected between the 2 with a braided line, but from the masted cylinder it's just your regular brake line.....WTF is the point of having a braided line then?
random hero 04-19-2006, 09:56 AM race pads vesrah's are by far the best IMO, its really night and day difference even between galfer/ebc HH pads.. they make a street pad which im sure is just as good.. must have more longevity and less initial bite
Plarp 04-19-2006, 11:37 AM Werd. Vesrah builds stonking kit.
Get 'em here (http://www.sportbiketrackgear.com)
SONIC7 04-19-2006, 01:15 PM OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SNAP!!
$85 for brake pads.... that's tough to swallow.
Cestode 04-19-2006, 01:53 PM for the BEST pads you can buy???? Easy to buy
tiltedworld 04-19-2006, 03:05 PM for the BEST pads you can buy???? Easy to buy
Agreed, I am a Vesrah devotee as well. Best damn pad ever. Have the RJL on y street and race bikes. Only reason I haven't put the SRJL's on my bike is that everyone I know tells me they up the ante even more and you'll never turn back. At $160 that's a tougher step to take!
Black39 04-19-2006, 03:11 PM The brakes are the same as those employed on the last incarnation of the GSX-R series.
This is true Plarpy, but the brakes on this year's model is definitely less responsive and simply spongy/weaker than last year's model. I thought it was the cable but I told the mechanic at suzuki about it when I took it in for a warrenty issue and he said "The bike is still awfully new", which is crap.
How do you like the brembo master cylinder Plarp? Idk if you had a chance to ride the brakes stock, but how is it in terms of performance? Did it come with braided lines or did you buy those seperatly?

That's cheap compared to what a lot of other places are charging for those pads and they do last a long time.

I never put the bike through it's paces with the OE mater cylinder. I bought a set of the Galfer Superbike lines and had a banjo bolt to marry the lines to the master cylinder that is specific to the Brembo unit as the Italians prefer to use a different thread pitch than the Japanese.
Again, I haven't really gotten the bike up to race pace due to a combination of incliment weather, new ride and lack of fairings. Granted, running 1:27's at Grattan is a respectable time, it's not close to race pace.
I should mention that I used the same exact master cylinder on my ZX-636B1 with Galfer lines and the same compound Vesrah RJL pads and that bike fucking STOPPED. So I'll use that as what we in the research field refer to as a control.
I'll post a full report, brakes, suspension and all else regarding the new bike after the Beaver Run event with WERA coming up on the last weekend of April.

Just got 750 k6! Think the same about spongyness on that front brake. My last bike, honda hornet 600 got a harder braking feeling. However i've done some emergency stops and the brakes kinda work well i guess. I'm learning many things about the gixxer.
By the way, nice forum! :cheers
Plarp 04-19-2006, 08:26 PM Interestingly enough, Roadracing World's 600 shootout decrees that the Suzuki has the best brakes of the bunch.

Wow not that I have ridden any other new 600cc, but they must be horrible, if the GSXRs are the best according to them. :scratch
Plarp 04-19-2006, 09:16 PM Either that or they're a serious improvement. Then again, it's happened in the past where a new model-year bike sucks when compared to the previous model year.
eg. Every Harley ever built.
lawman118 04-19-2006, 11:17 PM would changing out the zook M/C to a yama M/C help out at all you think (in combo with SS lines). I have a 05 Yama R6 M/C on the work bench. I had originally bought it to replace the horrible M/C on the 04 kawi 10R, but then sold the bike.
Black39 04-19-2006, 11:21 PM I just got my bike back from the stearlership. They said there was a little air in the lines so they bleed the front brake. It *is* a little better now, but still quiet not what I want it to be. Im going upgrade that shit.
Black39 04-19-2006, 11:21 PM Oh yeah. How do you go about flushing the brake fluid on a bike? I know how to do it on a car, is it similar?
Eclipse00 04-20-2006, 12:03 AM First thing that I did was install braided lines and HH pads, best money I've spent so far.
