Who has drained their coolant? Can you run down the procedure, pics if possible. (of any specific screws or hoses to loosen or undo.) I am going to the track in a few weeks and need to replace it. Thanks in advance.

Pull the both hoses from the water pump housing on the left side of the motor. Run about a gallon of ddH2O (if you can get it, otherwise, distilled water is fine) until you no longer see that green tinge in the water that's coming out. Don't forget to empty the reservoir as well on the right side of the radiator. That's all I can remember without looking at the bike.

Cap it all up and fill it with your preferred, but race-legal, poison.

I need to do the same before hitting the track. This is my first brand new bike is there any reason to run the factory stuff for a while? I dunno if there is any special concoction in there to break in the water pump or something?

thanks plarp, H20 and water wetter.

make sure it is distilled water, not tap water.

Although, you can flush all the old coolant out with regular tap, you just don't want to run it with the water wetter

Should there be a drain plug also. I remember on my 10r that besides the hoses there was a drain plug on the side of the engine, left side down low.

There's a drain plug on the side of the water/oil pump, but it's easier to just pull the hoses that go to the radiator.

Distilled water is always best.

Cunning Man, the reason you must drain glycol-based coolant from your system is that it doesn't evaporate nearly as quickly as water (hence, it's depressed freezing point & higher boiling point, a function of London-dispersion forces, hydrogen bonding and ionization, the details of which I won't bore you with).

The problem with this is that if you go down and/or you motor breaks, coolant on the track is difficult to clean up and you'll have a whole paddock of people pissed at you, and the will know it's you. Coolant is very slippery and pets love it too!

There are no break-in additives that I'm aware of in the coolant coming from the factory. If you're really smart, you'll buy yourself some 7th Gear coolant from my man at www.sportbiketrackgear.com (http://www.sportbiketrackgear.com).

Does anyone have any pics? I want to change my coolant too. I need some visuals.

I just pulled the two hose on the left side that came off the rad. ran wter through them, hooked it back up and filled it and ran it for a few seconds then drained again.

Ok, Ill try that method out. So take the hose(s) that run directly from the rad, flush, then replace?

don't forget to burp the system when your done to get the air out.

I'm not sure where the drain bolt is on the gixxer but on the R6 is it was on the lower right side at the bottom of the case cover. The times I drained the R6 I used this and it was easy to flush the whole system, no need to pull hoses or anything.

after draining and refilling with new coolant ...
1. close the radiator cap
2. run the bike for a few minutes.
3. remove the cap, turn off the bike
4. Add fluid to top it off again.

Sometimes it take a few burping sessions to get the trapped air out.

I do the initial burp and than do it again after a ride.

If I pulled the one rad hose from the right side of the engine, will I be ok or should I go back and pull the otter two off? Thanks for the help!

You'll be good with just the one. IIRC the service manual only tells you to pull the one hose off. I always just pull one hose.
