DETROIT (Ticker) -- It's hard to tell what's
more improbable - the Vancouver Canucks rallying from a three-goal deficit at
Joe Louis Arena, or defenseman Marek Malik scoring the winner in overtime.
The Canucks extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games with a stunning 4-3
victory over the Detroit Red Wings as Markus Naslund got the tying goal with 25
seconds to go in regulation and Malik scored 3:02 into the extra period.
The 6-0-4 run matches the longest stretch without a loss in team history.
Vancouver won 10 straight earlier this season from November 9-30 and had a 5-0-5
streak from March 5-25, 1977.
This streak appeared over after the Red Wings took a 3-0 lead on Luc
Robitaille's goal just under 2 1/2 minutes into the third period.
But Trevor Linden started the comeback 2 1/2 minutes later and Trent Klatt made
it 3-2 at 10:48 with a power-play goal.
Naslund tied it with his league-leading 38th goal. With goaltender Peter Skudra
on the bench for an extra attacker, defenseman Mattias Ohlund took a shot from
the left faceoff circle that was kicked out by Curtis Joseph. But the puck hit
referee Don Van Massenhoven, enabling Naslund to flick it past Joseph while
falling at the right side of the net.
Shaken up earlier in the game, Malik ended a 16-game drought after Brendan
Morrison did all the work. Morrison split two defenders on the right side and
drew a third before sliding a backhanded pass across the slot. Malik skated into
it at the bottom of the left circle and steered the puck past Joseph for his
fourth goal of the season.
