: TECH - Slicks
Alchemist 02-18-2003, 09:58 PM For the 27/2 trackday I really need new tyres. I rang WHITE's RACING (track day tyre guys) to get an idea of costs and he was trying to convince me to get slicks over Rennsports. He also suggested a new Bridgestone tyre specifically for the 600 (001).
I researched all this , slicks -v- treaded tyres etc and now got myself somewhat confused. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wtf.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cry.gif Particularly since the guys from White's will swap the treaded tyres back whenever I want for free, if I want to go road riding (pretty rare lately). http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/bounce.gif
Apart from grip advantage and cost ($300 v $500), are there any issues I need to be concerned with. Everyone has a different view on this eg time for warming up http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/plthumbsdown.gif effect of hot/cold cycles on tyre life http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/plthumbsdown.gif
I recall that SyMB is going on to slicks at the trackday so any thoughts guys. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/idea.gif In the end I might just get'em to see how I go. Might be fun. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/banana.gif Haven't timed myself recently but I think I'm probably just under 2 mins at EC. Pathetic I know http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
PS Dean do you know anyone whose got some cheap raceglass ? Some guy out west is selling new for $650 but thought I'd try your contacts first.
Steve 1234 02-19-2003, 01:38 AM All i'm aware of (what I have heard) is that the life of slicks is dependant on heat cycles you put them through. ie heat them up leaven eem to go cold and then ride and heat em up agian. It was supposed to be the reason racers use the tyre warmers.
IF, I repeat IF this is true, that would be a good reason not to use them on the road (i guess). But then how many heat cyles does it take to stuff a tyre.
Guess im little help here....
Alchemist 02-19-2003, 02:06 AM Thanks, yes I don't intend to use them on the road, its more a case of is the hassle worth it on the track for a non-racer. Replies appreciated coz I ain't got much time to get my act together http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/burnout.gif
Woodzzter 02-19-2003, 02:40 AM One other thing to look out for if you are new to slicks is that road tyres will slide more before they give way and lose traction whereas the slicks will grip more but when they do let go you will get w whole lot less wan\rning about it and less time to try and correct it or make a save. Just something to remember.
SyMBi0TiK 02-19-2003, 04:33 AM i bought dunlop slicks today $420.90 for a set....
in stock right now...
i havent ridden on them yet so i dont know what theyre like....
but the guys at doin bikes said 3-4 laps warm up time.... that cant be right can it....?
if it is.... its gonna fucking suck.... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
please tell me im misinformed dean.... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
time to buy tyre warmers http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
hrmmm i wonder what they are worth?
Drizzt 02-19-2003, 04:52 AM i think it is either on circuit breakers website or motoconcepts site that has a for sale section, look in there and also look in local trading post etc and try find some 2nd hand, even formula extreme site

good luck... if you just doing a track day i would go with a set of supercorsas of even the new diablo corsas if there avail, i will be getting some diablos for the r1 when i kill the 208's
unless u get some tyre warmers. you get around 8 laps a sessions and using half the laps to warm up tyres wont be all that much fun..
Tech Doctor 02-19-2003, 05:31 AM The reason that racers use tyre warmers is so they can go hard from the start.
The main problem with riding slicks when they are cold is the fact that they can cold tear eaisly. Generally, I would give them 2-3 laps to get right up to operating tempreature for the creek.
The reason that slicks take more time to warm up than road tyres, is because road tyres use the flex in the tread to heat.
Heat cycles don't really affect rubber in tyres as much as it used to. Also slicks usually only get used for up to 4 or 5 sprint races, but some people might use them a bit more.
Dean.
SyMBi0TiK 02-19-2003, 08:04 AM well fuck it....
looks like its time for some second hand warmers.... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
BigAL 02-19-2003, 05:48 PM Id give 208gp or pilot race tyres a go b4 you go spending your money on slicks, that way u can use em for the road when they are shagged on the sides, plus you would need to be a really quick rider to heat slicks up to operating temp to get em working properly, and you will need a good steering dampner if you intend to use slicks cos you have more grip and it tends to tank slap more easily, I use a 208gp front and rear slick combo which i rather then full slicks around.

Is that what you used at EC. I may just sat f..k it and get the GPs. They are supposed to be pretty good, but so are the Rennsports....the Pirelli's....the.. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
I have an Ohlins steering damper on the 916, just need to get the tank mount for it, so thats not a problem. Thanks for everyone's advice. Now if I flip a coin, heads is Rennsports, tails is.... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
BigAL 02-19-2003, 06:17 PM first i used standard bridgestones 010, then full slicks, then full wets, then 208gp front rear slick, then full wets, it was a nightmare of a weekend for tyres considering I had no spare rims but it kept the tyre guys happy, I have used the 208gp front/rear slick for my past couple of race meetings which i prefer over full slicks as im sorta still learning, I find full slicks to be very nervous on the front. nearly everyone in supersports is using 208gp so it cant be bad.
SyMBi0TiK 02-19-2003, 07:16 PM yeah i know bigal....
in one of the other topics i realised im just gonna have to get warmers.... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
