Guys I have a question i have really been getting confused on. Which is countersteering, they say go right push right does that mean that when i go on a right turn i press on the right handle bar.

Just wanted to get my facts straight.
Thanks for any help,
Scott http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Yup, just press down on the clip on that is on the side you want to turn to. What it does is very slightly cause the front wheel to turn in the other direction, which then causes the bike to lean in the direction that you want to go. You probably won't even be able to notice the amount that the front wheel turns when you push on the clip on, it's a very slight amount.

To learn more you should take a class from the Motorcycle Saftey Foundation and read a copy of Keith Code's book, A Twist Of The Wrist.

If you are new to bikes I would not even try it for a while.
IMO countersteering really is something that comes with time. As you become a faster rider you eventually begin to do it naturally. You can really cause bad stuff if you push countersteering without the know how of how it all works.

Like Rbike said too, take some classes http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Yeah I took the MSF class but they talked about it but i was getting confused about it....so the best thing to do probably is try in a parking lot first....
But thanks though for all the help, http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Not to sound like a dick but trying countersteering in a parking lot is stupid! Countersteering happens with speed and turning. You are asking to drop your bike if you practice it on a parking lot.

If your riding, your countersteering.......simple as that...The only time you don't countersteer, is at VERY low speeds...... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

YES YES YES, someone actually understands the concept, as Hammer said, if you are riding a motorcycle and have gone faster than 15 mph you have counter steered... counter steering is the only way of making the bike turn, in any 2 wheeled vehicle wether it's a motorcycle or bycycle.

I agree that if you're riding, you're passively counter steering. However, ACTIVELY using countersteering to QUICKLY turn the bike is a skill that comes with practice.

Just because a person can ride a bike around the street does not mean they are able to actively use counter steering to steer their bike. You KNOW when you've finally figured it out and got it. I personally find counter steering one of the most enjoyable aspects of riding.

My tip for learning to counter steer: make sure you're going FAST enough! You can't be going too fast to use counter steering but you CAN be going too slowly. Try going about 40mph and lightly pushing on the clipons. The bike should lean toward the direction you're pushing. "Look right, push right, go right". http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

There's an article in the April 2003 of Sport Rider called Counter Steering vs. Body Steering. Actually, it's part 3 of 4 parts.

www.sportrider.com/0304 (http://www.sportrider.com/0304) for the rest of the parts

Cheers

If you are learning anything about counter steering (CS), you probably should read some books.

also consider checking out this thread on a different forum (sorry to cross post, but when people like Keith Code get into the mix, it is worth lurking):
http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21254

Regarding the comments about counter steering at slow speed: you will probably not notice the effects of counter steering slower than 15 MPH, however, counter steering actually works at all speeds...yes, even very slow speeds. at these speeds, however, the effect of CS lasts only an instant.
