: Purpose of kneedragging?

I watched the race this weekend.Ive seen hundreds before but never really noticed that in the corners the riders actually are lifting there knees off of the track. This may be a silly question but what is the real reason for dragging your knee in a corner? Is it for more stability? Is it to steer through the corner?Just curious.

You should ask this in the Riding Tech forum. But basically it's used as a measuring stick to determine at how much of a lean you are at, also as an outrigger to a much lesser degree. Your leg is just supposed to hang down there as a feeler for the ground, not as a stiff tripod point to balance the bike on.

Get the books Twist of The Wrist 1 & 2. They explain the purpose well, and I guarantee you will be much faster than before you read and applied the concepts described.

Keith's Soft Science of Roadracing is really good as well. And as said, draggin' pucks is a lean-angle guage, and also a way to create a little friction in a corner to scrub a slight bit of speed without touching the brakes, and also when you get really good, you can actually control the rear sliding (taking more weight off the rear tire by pushing a little harder with the knee) -- but most of the time, you want the puck just mm's off the track surface so you're not constantly grinding away the pucks... that can get really expensive.

Read Twist of the Wrist, take it to the track and it'll come all by itself http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Upper right http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Because you have less lean angle at the same speed, you have lots of room to go faster (= more lean). Just pull your knee in gradually as you lean more.

However, hanging off, dragging knee and having your leg against the frame at the same time is cool http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/bounce.gif

There are a few turns on our local track that are sharp enough for that - then you know you don't have any lean angle to spare anymore... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/bounce.gif Don't try it on street tires, though... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Guys sometimes lift their knees mid-corner to adjust the line. I do this at Cadwell where I link the two corners after the back straight. Inbetween the two corners I pull my leg back in and the bike starts to drift a little, setting me up for the second corner where I drop my knee again to get the bike turning sharper again.
I will also raise my knee a bit if I hit an apex that is raised above the track surface - don't fancy knee capping myself.

the pic that is captioned "rider crouched right down"

he still needs to keep his body in line, here his head is on the center line of the bike, it needs to be down more.

I think normally on slower corners I look like the picture for "Rider Sitting High" whats the downfalls for this? For the one "Rider Hanging off below the bike" sometimes on really tight corners.. I do this and feel as if im leaing ahead of the bike. Does that mean im sittin too far up on the tank and need to slide back on the seat some?

which drastically shows how stupid "chicken strips" are.

on the other hand i would prolly take the book back after reading how uncool the proper (a.k.a. fast) way is!!!

ok, back to the question, the purpose of knee dragging is to get the bike to turn while keeping it as upright as possible(bigger contact patch). Plus it look cool:cheers

It actually doesn't. Try finding a person with improper form, and no chicken strips and they will likely find little competition in a person that has great form but has 1.5" chicken strips.

Now compare the improper form guy to one with 1/2" chicken strips and it may be a different story.

In other words, 1/2" chicken strips don't tell nearly as much about a rider than 1" strips do. You simply aren't capable of going very fast with 1/5" chicken strips.

I drag my testicles , it hurts when i hit em on the apex :)

Yeah thats yates alright, i like spies better though, elbows so out that they go down even without going to the lean angle tha tyates did on that pic.

Knee is a good gauge, however when you feel the boots are scraping eventhough thay re fully tucked in on the balls of the feet on the pegs, the tips of the pegs are grinding against asphalt, your knee feels like its beeing sandwiched by the bike and asphalt, thats the time to push your knee out hard to pick the bike up, you are pretty low and you may lose traction any moment now. Belive me it happened to me last weekend. I was almost positive that i was gonna low side, but i didint, somehow saved it with brute lower body strenght i guess. It was not technique for sure :)
